With Netflix announcing the renewal of the popular show The Umbrella Academy for a third season, fans were delighted at the idea of watching the dysfunctional Hargreeves family make a return to the screen and wreak havoc.
After unveiling a series of character posters, the streamer has now taken to Instagram to release a few photos from the upcoming season that has fuelled fan anticipation. The photos show the rear side of the actors and their somewhat tattered umbrellas.
The caption says “take cover” with a bird emoji, and the background shows a few shadows of birds that are presumably sparrows. This directly hints at the sparring between the original Umbrella Academy and their alter-egos, the Sparrow Academy, who will make a debut in the third season.
Created in 2019 by Steve Blackman and Jeremy Slater, this top-rated Netflix series with its talented ensemble cast and a promising setting was adapted from Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s The Umbrella Academy.
According to Blackman, the third season is “wilder, bigger, zanier” than anything they have done before as they are “building up” the emotional conflicts, dramatic tension and action.
Teasing “some very big surprises with the family this year”, Blackman said that they have “tonnes of Easter eggs… more Easter eggs than ever this year than our previous seasons.” He has also promised unexpected “growth for this family this year” besides a riveting narrative progression.
The older cast, including Elliot Page, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Robert Sheehan, David Castaneda, Tom Hopper, Colm Feore and more, shall make a return. New faces like Justin Cornwell, Britney Oldford, Genesis Rodriguez, Cazzie David, and Jake Epstein shall join them. The new characters’ names include Marcus, Fei, Alphonso, Solane and Jayme.
The first two seasons of The Umbrella Academy is now streaming on Netflix. While the date has not yet been announced, the third season is set to premiere on Netflix in 2022.
