'The Umbrella Academy' season 3: Everything we know

“If you’re raised to believe nothing about you is special if the benchmark is extraordinary, what do you do if you’re not?”

Created in 2019 by Steve Blackman and Jeremy Slater, this highly popular Netflix series with its talented ensemble cast and a promising setting was adapted from Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s The Umbrella Academy.

The series revolves around the mysterious sudden birth of 43 children all over the world, of which seven are adopted by the idiosyncratic billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, he calls them The Umbrella Academy. The siblings, of whom one is dead and another alienated due to their alleged lack of superpowers, unite to save the world from an apocalypse at which they miserably fail, leading to the second season where they are sent back in time to amend their mistake.

Blackman said, “I like to think as we go forward that their powers are also evolving. They’re learning new things. They were trained until they were 14 or 15 by a very dysfunctional dad but then the family blew apart before they could finish their training. They might even discover in the future that their powers are stronger when they’re together.”

With the rumour mills abuzz about the soon-to-be-released third season theories, we decided to provide a comprehensive guide to the much-awaited new season of the show, which has also been renewed for a fourth season.

Everything we know so far about The Umbrella Academy season 3

Has The Umbrella Academy been renewed for a third season?

In November 2020, much to the delight of fans and chagrin of the critics, Netflix renewed The Umbrella Academy for a third season after a long silence, following the release of the second season in July 2020.

One of Netflix’s most popular and highest streaked shows, it has garnered a cult-like following over the course of two seasons with its set of intriguing characters.

When will it be available on Netflix for streaming?

The Umbrella Academy was supposed to start filming its third season in February 2021 and according to Deadline, production is absolutely on schedule.

The Umbrella Academy season three is slated for a June 22nd, 2022 premiere on Netflix.

How many episodes will the third season have?

Seasons 1 and 2 have all had 10 episodes each and season 3 will be no different. On his Instagram, Steve Blackman had posted the title page of the scripts for the third season to provide a teaser.

The page revealed the name for the first episode- “Meet the Family”. This has set off various theories with many fans anticipating the addition of newer family members or even other such super families.

Who are the recurring cast members on the show?

The show’s creators have not confirmed the names of the cast members for the third season yet it is not hard to presume that the entire Hargreeves family shall be making a return. This includes Elliot Page as Vanya, Aidan Gallagher as Five, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, David Castaneda as Diego, Tom Hopper as Luther as well as Colm Feore as Sir Reginald.

Justin H. Min shall make a return as Ben too, as, despite the prophecy, he did not die in season 2. At a 2020 press conference, Blackman had said that Ben would be “alive and not a ghost”.

“Hopefully, if we get a season 3”, said Blackman, as reported by SyFy, “you’ll get to see has quite a different personality and appearance”. Blackman also spoke of how Ritu Arya’s Lila Pitts has “unfinished business with the family” which confirms the return of this character as well.

Are there going to be new additions to the cast?

Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger with the elusive shadow of the members of the Sparrow Academy paving the way for the introduction of new characters in the third season. Entertainment Weekly made a list of all the newly assigned cast members who shall reportedly be given numbers. They are:

  • Justin Cornwell as No. 1/ Marcus
  • Britney Oldford as No. 3/Fei
  • Jake Epstein as No. 4/ Alphonso
  • Genesis Rodriguez as No. 5/Solane
  • Cazzie David as No. 6/Jayme

Justin H. Min shall be playing the role of No.2 aka the other-Ben who has been described as a “Machiavellian tactician” who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. It will indeed be extremely interesting to see how the two sets of characters mesh with each other as well as the plotline. Since the casting decisions have not yet been publicly announced, one can only hope to meet more of those 43 babies.

Netflix recently revealed yet another cast member on their Twitter account. Euphoria star Javon Walton will be seen in an undisclosed role.

What will happen in the third season?

Season 2 strengthened daddy issues as the Hargreeves family managed to evade the apocalypse by travelling to the 1960s, yet did not get showered with praises; instead, they found themselves in a fix. The finale showed how they failed to prevent the apocalypse which changed the entire course of history, wiping out the existence of the version of 2019 unique to them. It is this issue that shall be addressed in the third season along with the introduction of the Sparrow Academy and their relationship with the Umbrella Academy.

Except for Ben, none of the characters of Sparrow Academy are alternate versions of the members of the Umbrella Academy. Ben’s alternate version is creepy, to say the least as one shows how time affects every life, decision and existence minutely. However, with the Umbrella Academy finally uniting for a common cause, season 3 might see the dysfunctional family resolve their past disputes.

Reddit is abuzz with fan theories about the new season. Highly anticipated, we can only hope that the third season shall not let the fans down.
