‘Glass Onion’: Everything we know about the ‘Knives Out’ sequel

Netflix has just unveiled the title for the Knives Out sequel in a new title announcement teaser. Directed by Rian Johnson, the highly-anticipated release is titled, Glass Onion.

Following his Star Wars stint with The Last Jedi, filmmaker Rian Johnson ventured into the murder mystery genre with an oeuvre imitating Agatha Christie’s whodunnit novels, titled Knives Out. With detective Benoit Blanc in the centre, the first film was a huge success, grossing over $300 million at the box office.

The first film also won Johnson a Best Original Screenplay nomination at the Oscars. However, like a smart businessman, Johnson held on to the sequel rights, denying the studio, Lionsgate the opportunity to immediately dive into making the sequels, before selling off the trilogy to Netflix at a staggering amount.

With Daniel Craig at the centre as Detective Benoit Blanc, the upcoming film is slated for a late 2022 release. Ahead of its premiere, here is everything we know about the Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion:

How much did Netflix acquire the Knives Out franchise for?

Netflix doubled Lionsgate’s offer and cashed out a reported $450 million for the Knives Out franchise.

Set to be a trilogy, Netflix swooped in with their staggering sum and paid more than double the amount they spent on making The Gray Man, an action thriller by the Russo Brothers starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas among others, which is set to be the most expensive Netflix Original film at $200 million.

When will the Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, be released on Netflix?

Netflix has not yet confirmed an official release date for the sequel.

At the beginning of the year, a snippet from the upcoming sequel appeared in Netflix’s trailer for slated 2022 releases that provided the first look at Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc and the rest of the cast, dressed in fancy clothing, boarding a yacht.

On Monday, June 13th, 2022, Netflix released a title announcement trailer. Previously, the sequel was referred to with a working title, Knives Out 2. Johnson revealed the name of his upcoming film to be Glass Onion which also announced most of the cast.

The title announcement teaser talked about Benoit Blanc’s return “this holiday season” which could refer to anytime between Thanksgiving to the Christmas holidays.

In 2019, Knives Out was released on November 27th. A box office hit, it amassed a global revenue of $311 million.

Since Netflix is open to playing some of its films in the theatre, including the upcoming Russo brothers’ espionage action thriller The Gray Man, for a limited time period, Glass Onion might premiere a few weeks before its actual release date on Netflix for an exclusive run in theatres.

Where has the Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion been filmed?

Glass Onion, then titled Knives Out 2, began production on June 28th, 2021 in Greece. Rian Johnson confirmed the news by sharing a photo on his social media, following it up with a caption that read: “Day one of filming on the next Benoit Blanc mystery. Thanks to all the lovely patient people here in Greece for letting us do all this murdering on their peaceful shores..”

On September 13th, 2021, the crew finished filming, as confirmed by Johnson’s tweet:

Who are the cast members in the Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion?

Knives Out had a brilliant ensemble cast in 2019 which included Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Jaeden Martell, Michael Shannon, Katherine Langford, Don Johnson and LaKeith Stanfield, with Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc in the centre.

The cast for its sequel, Glass Onion is equally impressive.

Craig will be returning as Blanc to solve mysteries yet again. Besides his role as James Bond, Blanc is Craig’s most iconic role and is said to have drawn the same kind of excitement from the veteran actor.

The rest of the cast includes Ethan Hawke from the Before trilogy, Jessica Henwick from The Matrix Resurrections, Kathryn Hahn from WandaVision, Edward Norton from Fight Club, Kate Hudson from Bride Wars, Leslie Odom Jr. from The Many Saints of Newark, Madelyn Cline from Outer Banks, Janelle Monae from Hidden Figures and Dave Bautista from Guardians of the Galaxy.

What might happen in the Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion?

Johnson was opposed to calling it a Knives Out sequel. He said, “It’s been such a mindfuck, because I sat on the idea for the first one for 10 years, and with this one, I’m starting with a blank page. It’s not really a Knives Out sequel. I need to come up with a title for it so I can stop calling it ‘The Knives Out Sequel’ because it’s just Daniel Craig as the same detective with a totally new cast.”

Glass Onion will follow the same Agatha Christie-like whodunnit plot narrative that is very appealing to Johnson and will see detective Benoit Blanc travel to Greece (possibly on a yacht) where he will have to solve a murder mystery.

Craig has even teased the sequel to be even better than the original film. In 2021, he told Empire, “Dare I say it’s better? We’ll see. I don’t want to tempt fate. It’s different, and that’s the amazing thing.”
He added. “It’s still a Benoit Blanc mystery, but it’s very different. I’m very excited about it.”
