Not a week goes by where we don’t get cast news for Rian Johnson’s upcoming Knives Out 2, and this week is no different with the latest images from the set of the film revealing that four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke has joined the mammoth ensemble cast.
Hawke’s surprise inclusion joins the casting of Jessica Henwick earlier this month, alongside previously announced cast members: Daniel Craig, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline and Edward Norton.
The new cast announcement joins the news reported in April that the streaming service Netflix has bought the Knives Out franchise for $450million, a deal which includes rights to both the series’ second instalment, as well as Knives Out 3 later in the future. The sequel will follow a whole new family and plot, diverting from the Thrombey family, whilst Daniel Craig’s steely detective, Benoit Blanc, returns to solve the case. Johnson has also expressed his interest to follow the template of Agatha Christie’s novels, setting his sequel film in Greece instead of New England.
From 2005s neo-noir thriller Brick starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt to 2012s time-bending sci-fi Looper, with Bruce Willis, director Rian Johnson has consistently shown his quality in versatility and looks to again regain the trust of audiences following his widely disliked Star Wars outing, The Last Jedi.
The casting of Ethan Hawke is an inspired move, taking a break from the shooting of the upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight, in the latest behind the scenes images from Knives Out 2, Hawke can be seen opposite Dave Bautista holding a fancy water pistol. Though the plot may be wrapped in secrecy, early predictions suggest that the plot may revolve around a wealthy family on holiday abroad who find themselves in a murderous ploy.
