5 best films to watch on Netflix in May 2022

While Netflix has an interesting lineup for May 2022, let us first have a chat about the previous month.

With an exciting lineup of Netflix Originals for 2022, besides a charming and promising set of Original series to arrive this year, we must acknowledge Netflix’s constant valiant efforts to add new titles to their shelves for our audio-visual pleasure.

In April 2022, Netflix delivered a lot of interesting content, ranging from films like Apollo 10 ½ to The Bubble, Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story etc However, April also proved to be a tough month for the streamer as it lost a record number of subscribers due to the rise in subscription prices and an overall disdain towards the dwindling content quality.

While Netflix is predicted to lose two million subscribers by July 2022, we can only hope for the streaming service to make a turnaround with new releases this month which seem quite promising, with a series of old films and new Originals making their way onto the shelves across all genres.

Ahead of their release, we decided to give you a headstart and get your watchlist sorted. Here are the five best Netflix Original films to watch on Netflix in May 2022:

5 best films to watch on Netflix in May 2022

Marmaduke– Mark A.Z. Dippé

Marmaduke will begin streaming on Netflix on May 6th, 2022.

In 1954, Brad Anderson came up with the eponymous comic strip that revolves around a titular Great Dane, his family and their joint escapades. While the comic strip was adapted into a 2010 film starring Owen Wilson and Emma Stone, the strip is now being adapted into an animated film by Netflix that stars Pete Davidson as Marmaduke. He will be joined by J.J. Simmons, Shelby Young, Julie Nathanson, David Koechner, Erin Fitzgerald and others.

The film will feature Marmaduke in the centre as the overgrown Great Dane whose knack for mischief and food, despite his loyalty towards his family, taints him. To prove his calibre, he partakes in an elite dog show where he finds himself existing as a misfit among arrogant dogs and amusing rivals.

Senior Year– Alex Hardcastle

Senior Year is scheduled for a May 13th, 2022 premiere on Netflix.

Rebel Wilson caused quite the stir on the Internet when she paid a tribute to Britney Spears in a classic green outfit as a promo for her film. Wilson is returning to the film industry after a long hiatus and will be seen as the lead character in this juvenile 13 Going On 30-like teen comedy that talks of self-discovery and acceptance.

Wilson will star as Ruby, a 37-year-old woman, who wakes up after a two-decade-long coma induced by a cheerleading accident in high school. Determined to regain her popularity in high school, Ruby goes back to school and faces new trials and tribulations as she tries to fit into an entirely different generation. Wilson will be joined by a massive ensemble cast, namely Mary Holland, Alicia Silverstone, Sam Richardson, Zoe Chao, Chris Parnell, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Molly Brown, Justin Hartley, Angourie Rice, Brandon Scott Jones, Michael Cimino, Joshua Colley, Lucy Taylor, Tyler Barnhardt, Avantika etc.

Jackass franchise- Jeff Tremaine

While the first three films of the franchise have already arrived on May 1st, 2022, the rest of the five Jackass films are scheduled to arrive on May 20th, 2022.

This hilarious franchise has a recurring cast, including Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam Margera, Chris Pontius, Jason Acuna, Preston Lacy etc. The feature films are based on Tremaine, Spike Jonze and Knoxville’s collaborative and controversial 2000 television series.

While the cast reunited in 2002 to film a conclusion to the show, the epic cult-like following and popularity of the film led to the introduction of a full-blown franchise, the films within the franchise are Jackass: The Movie, Jackass Number Two, Jackass Presents: Matt Hoffman’s Tribute to Evel Knievel, Jackass 3D, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa and 2022 release Jackass Forever, which has been called the best film of the franchise.

Thar– Raj Singh Chaudhury

Thar will premiere on Netflix on May 6th, 2022.

Produced by Anil and Harshvardhan Kapoor, this neo-western action film is inspired by the noir genre and set in the gritty 80s. Starring the Kapoor duo and Fatima Sana Shaikh, the film will revolve around an antique dealer who travels extensively through an alienated Rajasthan village that has been ravaged by violence. On this journey, he crosses paths with the local inspector who is investigating these murders.

Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is known for the excessive usage of violence and abuse in his films. He is an integral contributor to the script which already promises a gripping and intense premise via its trailer. Named after the famous desert in Rajasthan, the film trailer also features vast shots of a dry landscape with dead animals that ushers in a feeling of despair, dread and sinister upcoming events.

The Takedown– Louis Leterrier

The film will release on Netflix on May 6th, 2022.

If you enjoyed Lupin on Netflix, then make sure to watch The Takedown which stars Omar Sy as one of the leads alongside Laurent Lafitte.  According to Leterrier, this is the sequel to the 2012 film On the Other Side of the Tracks and is an intense take on the buddy cop comedy genre.

The film will revolve around two cops Ousmane Diakite and Francois Monge who previously worked together before parting ways. Soon, they come together for a new investigation that goes from being a simple drug deal to a high-profile criminal investigation in the French Alps where the unlikely duo try to escape danger amidst burgeoning comedic elements.
