While 2021 had been incredibly successful for Netflix, the streamer has been suffering unfathomable financial losses this year. From a huge subscriber exodus to dwindling stock prices and general disdain towards their quality of content, the streamer is currently in a tough spot. However, they are still undeterred in their quest for adding new titles to their shelves in June 2022, some of which have already risen to the top of the charts.
Every week, we present the ten most popular series on Netflix at Best of Netflix, which often include new releases and old favourites that storm the charts and induce social media banter.
Based on Gabriel Ba and Gerard Way’s graphic novel series, The Umbrella Academy, created by Steve Blackman, became an instant sensation on Netflix since its inception. The third season premiered last week and garnered a massive viewership of nearly 125 million hours.
The third season introduces new cast members like Britne Oldford, Jake Epstein, Justin Cornwell, Cazzie David and Genesis Rodriguez, in addition to existing cast members, namely Elliot Page, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Robert Sheehan, David Castaneda, Tom Hopper, Colm Feore and more.
Upon its release, the first season of The Umbrella Academy, too, has shot up to the seventh position on the charts with people trying to catch up on the events. The season has been viewed for 27 million hours.
All four seasons of Stranger Things continue to occupy the spot on the global charts for nearly five weeks in a row. Ahead of the release of the second volume of its fourth season, the first volume, which debuted on May 27th, 2022, has been viewed for 76 million hours this week. Created by the Duffer brothers, the fourth season was a highly-anticipated drop after the three-year-long hiatus and broke several streaming records.
The fourth season is darker and scarier than the previous seasons. Taking place across Hawkins, California and Kamchatka in Russia, the fourth season sees the demonic Vecna wreak havoc on Hawkins, killing people in a gruesome manner. The season stars Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, David Harbour and Finn Wolfhard among several others.
The sixth season of Steven Knight’s popular British crime drama series Peaky Blinders has been on the charts for a third time in a row with a viewership of little more than 30 million hours. Starring Cillian Murphy in the lead as Thomas Shelby, the period piece also stars Tom Hardy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Sophie Rundle, Paul Anderson, Sam Claflin, Finn Cole, Amber Anderson and Stephen Graham.
Rowan Atkinson’s brand new insect drama-comedy series Man vs. Bee has occupied the tenth spot upon its premiere with 18 million hours of viewership. Atkinson is still as funny as ever and evokes the nostalgia of the bumbling buffoon Mr Bean as he battles bees in his newest physical comedy venture.
