Netflix has recently revealed data that gives an insight into the streamers’ most-watched movies and television shows.
While the service has released the number of hours watched for each of their highest performing titles, Netflix released a statement that explains, “Success on Netflix comes in all shapes and sizes and is not determined by hours viewed alone.”
“We have enormously successful movies and TV shows with both lower and higher hours viewed. It’s all about whether a movie or TV show thrilled its audience — and the size of that audience relative to the economics of the title.”
With that being said, it is interesting to see which movies racked up the most hours. While The Night Agent was crowned the most popular television show on Netflix in 2023, The Mother, starring Jennifer Lopez, took the top spot for movies.
The Mother is an original Netflix film that debuted on the service in May. Yet, since then, it has been watched for over 249,900,000 hours. Directed by Niki Caro, the movie might have become incredibly popular with viewers, but its critical reception was much more mixed.
With 209,700,000 hours watched, Luther: Fallen Sun comes in second place. The film is part of the Luther franchise, which started out as a BBC crime thriller series.
Another thrilling action movie, Extraction 2, made it to third place, while Kenya Barris’ romantic comedy You People followed behind. Rounding out the top five with 173,600,000 hours watched was a perfect blend of action and comedy – Murder Mystery 2, starring Adam Sandler.
