If the Netflix slate of original true-crime documentaries fascinates you, don’t forget to tune into A Toxic Love Story! Premiering on July 22nd, the documentary follows a newlywed couple from California, who start receiving life-threatening emails from an anonymous sender who is immediately suspected to be the husband’s ex-girlfriend. While the ex is quickly apprehended, resulting in a sensational local scandal, her arrest is unfortunately a clear sign that the case is far from over.
As authorities dig deeper into what seems like a stereotypical love triangle, the case evolves into a twisted web of deception, making everyone question who the real victim and villain truly are. A Toxic Love Story captures how the tables turn as digital evidence surfaces alongside contradictory testimonies, showcasing the constant shift in the roles of victim and villain and exploring the extent and consequences of blackmail, betrayal, and manipulation.
Elize: Shadows of a Woman (Felipe Vellas, 2026)
Scheduled to arrive on July 22nd, Elize: Shadows of a Woman is a Netflix Original Brazilian production that dramatises the harrowing real-life case of Elize Matsunaga. The Netflix movie tells the story of the unravelling of the Matsunagas when the Brazilian native murdered and dismembered her husband, Marcos Matsunaga, in their Sao Paulo apartment. While the pair was already navigating a troublesome marriage, things only got worse when she discovered her husband’s infidelity.
Elize: Shadows of a Woman delves beyond the headlines into the complex psychology, toxic dynamics, and mounting pressures that led Elize to turn into such a brutal act. The true story, originally chronicled in Netflix’s true-crime documentary Elize Matsunaga: Once Upon a Crime, has been reiterated with a fictionalised, dramatic lens, offering an exclusive, rare insight into a crime that shocked the nation.
Ransom Canyon (Amanda Marsalis, David McWhirter, Meera Menon, and Michael Offer, 2025-Present)
Slated to hit Netflix shelves on July 23rd, the second season of Ransom Canyon picks up six months after the events of the debut season, since Quinn, a concert pianist, escaped her hometown to make her dreams a reality. In the upcoming instalment, Quinn has to figure out where she actually belongs – in the small town she once tried to live in or in New York City that never really stops. As for the other half of the lovers?
Well, rancher Staten plans to keep up his fight to reclaim his legacy after being disinherited as a trustee of his family’s Double K Ranch. But knowing Quinn and Staten will find themselves dealing with major professional cliffhangers, it only makes sense to be worried about whether they will find their way back to each other. As they say, in Ransom Canyon, love stories are no cakewalk, but always worth the wait.
72 Hours (Tim Story, 2026)
Netflix is ready with its mixed bag of content this week, and the next in line is a laugh-out-loud comedy starring Kevin Hart, 72 Hours. Releasing on July 24th, the Netflix Original film follows Joe, a 40-year-old advertisement executive, who accidentally finds himself part of a group chat for a twentysomething bachelor party in Miami. Desperate to prove he can still connect with the youth to save his flailing career, Joe flies down to join the chaos.
What begins as a three-day trip of trying to fit into a world he no longer belongs to evolves into complete mayhem as his attempts escalate into disaster. 72 Hours follows Joe on his wild weekend spree as he confronts immeasurable Miami debauchery and unexpected cultural clashes, accidentally running afoul of the law while cruising through chaotic parties and city rides.
The Truthers (Roger Gual, 2026)
Finally, to wrap up the weekly marathon, Netflix has a Spanish psychological thriller, The Truthers, coming up next on July 24th. The Netflix movie revolves around Ruth, a 30-year-old woman who returns to her childhood home after her mother suddenly passes away under mysterious circumstances. Despite years of estrangement, the incident results in a reunion between Ruth and her retired father, Martin, who has become increasingly obsessed over the years.
Since retiring, Martin has undergone a terrifying transformation, having turned alarmingly grumpy and aggressive. He has even installed security cameras throughout the house, always finding himself deeply entrenched in one conspiracy theory or another. Although Ruth didn’t pay much heed to his erratic behaviour all this time, her mother’s death makes her start questioning if it’s about time she started asking questions.
