Everything to know about the Josh Hartnett thriller, ‘Below’

On today’s episode of Next on Netflix, Josh Hartnett is finally ready for his blockbuster TV comeback with a gritty, pulsating new thriller, titled Below. So, expect to find yourself deep in the treacherous hot waters of Newfoundland this autumn.

Created by Jesse McKeown, who also served as one of the writers on The Umbrella Academy, the six-episode thriller unfolds in a small Canadian town that has become victim to a mysterious sea creature, where residents must fight back to prevent their community and way of life from becoming extinct.

Speaking of why she chose Newfoundland as the setting of Below, McKeown tells Tudum, “I’ve been coming to Newfoundland for many years, and it’s become a part of my life. I just always felt like I wanted to set something here, that this would be a great place for something big and something kind of epic.”

While Hartnett feels similarly about the upcoming series, for those curious, here’s a comprehensive overview of everything known so far about Below.

What is the plot?

Below is a six-episode thriller series about Calvin Penney, a generous, selfless, and equally stubborn fisherman from a small Newfoundland town, who’s still grieving the mysterious death of his father from decades ago. So, when an enigmatic sea creature starts haunting his hometown, Calvin has no option but to fight back to prevent his tight-knit community from falling apart.

Desperate to shield his son Wade and the rest of his family, Calvin joins forces with a visiting marine researcher to face the creature and uncover the secrets buried deep in the island. “Blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humour, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change – both terrifying and inevitable,” the synopsis reads.

Who is in the cast and crew?

Josh Hartnett is leading the series as Calvin Penney from Snooks Arm, Newfoundland. Below also stars Mackenzie Davis as Fonda Howander, Charlie Heaton as Wade Penney, Willow Kean as Ruth Penney, Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney, and Kaleb Horn as Noah.

Jesse McKeown serves as the creator, and the script is co-written by Karen Walton, Perry Chafe, and Natty Zavitz. Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver, and Stephen Dunn take the director’s chairs for the episodes. McKeown also executive produces alongside Jessica Rhoades on behalf of Pacesetter. Hartnett, Childs, Louise Sutton and Sharon Hall will executive produce as well.
