Five Netflix releases to watch out for this week
Untold UK: Liverpool’s Miracle of Istanbul (Matthew Rudge, 2026)
Scheduled to hit Netflix shelves on May 19th, Liverpool’s Miracle of Istanbul serves as the second entry of the streamer’s Untold UK series. The Netflix documentary chronicles the inside story of the 2004-05 Liverpool FC season, revisiting the team’s turbulent domestic campaign, managerial shake-up, and the unforgettable 2005 UEFA Champions League Final in Turkey, where Liverpool defeated AC Milan on penalties despite a 3-0 scorecard at halftime.
The documentary’s narrative structure highlights the defining elements that created the perfect storm for “The Miracle of Istanbul.” From exploring the roster disarray and managerial changes to illuminating the team’s gruelling road to the final that paved the way for a historic comeback, Untold UK: Liverpool’s Miracle of Istanbul captures one of the most monumental chapters in football history that deserves to be relived.
The Boroughs (Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, 2026)
The next pick of the week is The Boroughs, a gripping new sci-fi mystery drama executive-produced by the Stranger Things creators, The Duffer Brothers. Slated for release on May 21st, the eight-episode Netflix series is set in a seemingly harmless and shielded retirement community where a newcomer’s arrival is garlanded with a monstrous encounter. So, although viewers can expect a change of scenery from Hawkins, Indiana, to the New Mexico desert, mystery remains at the core here, too.
Similar to how they were previously introduced to a group of bike-riding preteens who turned out to be heroes, The Boroughs spotlights a new bunch of misfits with invisible capes who have a few more years on them than the kids. While the plot thickens with the monstrous run-in, it ultimately pushes him to join a crew of unlikely heroes who dig deep to uncover the darkest secrets plaguing the town.
Ladies First (Thea Sharrock, 2026)
Up next on the queue is the long-awaited comedy adaptation of the 2018 French film, I Am Not an Easy Man, Ladies First, headlined by Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike, releasing on May 22nd. The forthcoming comedy flick, directed by Thea Sharrock, tells the story of a ladies’ man, high-powered executive Damien Sachs, who gets an unprecedented reality check when he wakes up in an alternate universe where women run the world, just in time for his takeover as CEO of a glamorous ad agency.
As he finds himself in the most unlikely of places, he locks horns with a fiery, fearless female counterpart, Alex Fox, who makes survival twice as difficult for him. Interestingly, Alex had been one of the most underestimated and underappreciated employees under Damien in the real world, which he can no longer return to. Subsequently, Ladies First follows Damien and Alex in this parallel universe as they fight it out for the top spot in a world where the tables have already turned.
Mating Season (Jennifer Flackett and Nick Kroll, 2026)
Netflix cannot do without comedic punches every now and then, and neither can we. So, the streaming giant is bringing to you the latest adult animated comedy from the Big Mouth creators, titled Mating Season. Big Mouth follows a crew of adolescents and their polarising Hormone Monsters. And for those wondering, the forthcoming Netflix series is an adult-animated romantic comedy set in the animal world.
Mating Season explores the themes of love, sex, and relationships, highlighting the universal need to find a better half and, simultaneously, mutate the species, from the perspectives of bears, raccoons, deer, foxes, and a horde of several other adorable critters. In short, if you’ve loved Big Mouth and its stories of growing up, you should be here for the Netflix storytelling of actual grown-ups, when the show drops on May 22nd.
Bad Thoughts (Tom Segura, 2025-Present)
Also returning this week to put an end to our weekly marathon is Tom Segura’s dark sketch-comedy series, Bad Thoughts, premiering on May 24th. The series is an original collection of hilarious stories that captures and underscores darkly comedic, sometimes provocative themes. So, instead os a single continuous story, Segura stars in a series of cinematic vignettes, capturing hilariously twisted fantasy-driven scenarios.
The second season of Bad Thoughts intends to continue to shatter the fences of decency, embracing the dark and wildly unfiltered comedic aspect of Segura’s unapologetic tone, with sketches this time, ranging invariably from extensively bizarre, cringe-worthy run-ins to layered musical numbers, putting a laughter-filled end to the week you were frowning on to begin with.
