Why you should be excited about satirical comedy, ‘Ladies First’

Imagine a world where all the power resides in women’s clutches. Quite fascinating, right? Although many desire such a reality, Ladies First on Netflix actually plans to make dreams come true this May.

In the forthcoming Netflix movie directed by Thea Sharrock, best known for her works in Wicked Little Letters and Me Before You, Oscar nominee Sacha Baron Cohen goes head-to-head with fellow Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike, as a ladies’ man finds himself in an alternate reality where the only power players are women.

While the pairing was announced earlier in 2024, Netflix most recently rolled out the highly anticipated trailer alongside its first-look photos, offering viewers the much-awaited glimpse into this new chapter that promises a unique look at gender dynamics in an alternate universe.

So, in case you were planning to flip the script with a one-of-a-kind pick on Netflix, here’s a rundown of everything you should know about Ladies First.

What is the plot?

Ladies First brings a real eye-opener to a ladies’ man after he finds himself in a parallel universe run entirely by women. There, he specifically locks horns with a feisty female counterpart, who makes life twice as hard. The comedy film adapts Eleonore Pourriat’s French movie, I Am Not an Easy Man. It primarily follows high-profile executive Damien Sachs, who seems to have it all – money, power, and never-ending flings.

But just in time for his takeover of an ad agency as CEO, his life begins to unravel as he wakes up in an alternate universe completely dominated by women. Not long after, he finds himself going up against Alex Fox, one of his former underling employees, in the universe he no longer belongs. However, now that the code of conduct has changed in more ways than one and Alex is at the top of her game, it won’t be easy for Damien to land the role he thought was already his.

Who is in the cast and crew?

Sacha Baron Cohen has been cast to portray Damien Sachs, while Rosamund Pike has been roped in to play Alex Fox. In addition to them, Ladies First features Richard E Grant, Emily Mortimer, Charles Dance, Fiona Shaw, Tom Davis, Weruche Opia, Kathryn Hunter, Kadiff Kirwan, and Bill Paterson.

Thea Sharrock directed the comedy from a screenplay written by Natalie Krinsky, Cinco Paul, and Katie Silberman. Krinsky and Nicky Kentish Barnes serve as executive producers with Liza Chasin, Eleonore Dailly, and Edouard de Lachomette producing.
