Everything we know about the new Anthony Mackie Netflix film

Netflix will premiere a brand new family adventure film titled We Have a Ghost that stars a brilliant ensemble, including Anthony Mackie and David Harbour.

Netflix has recently begun acquiring rights to online stories and news stories due to their increasing demand. Following the acquisition of rights to The Watcher, set to be helmed by Ryan Murphy, the streamer also gained rights to the eponymous 2017 VICE short story on which the film is based.

The project has been written and directed by filmmaker Christopher Landon. Landon has recently directed Freaky and the sequel to Happy Death Day 2U. The writer of the short story, Geoff Manaugh is serving as the executive producer alongside Temple Hill Entertainment as the production company.

Ahead of the film’s anticipated release, here is everything we know about We Have a Ghost

What is the plot of the film?

The film was initially planned under the working title of Ernest. It is also based on the 2017 short story of the same name by Geoff Manaugh, published on VICE Motherboard

We Have a Ghost will feature a ghost named Ernest who was discovered by the homeowner, Frank and named so due to his uncanny similarities with the late Oscar-winning actor, Ernest Borgnine.

Frank discovers Ernest and begins filming videos that turn the apparition into an overnight viral sensation. With the help of his high-schooler son, Kevin, Frank decides to make the most of Ernest’s growing popularity. However, things soon take a turn for the worse when both Ernest and Kevin go missing and the CIA become involved.

Who are the cast members in the film?

The upcoming Netflix film has a stellar ensemble cast. While their roles are not yet confirmed, Mackie will presumably be seen as Kevin while Harbour will portray the role of Ernest.

Anthony Mackie will be returning for his seventh Netflix Original with We Have a Ghost. He was recently in Netflix’s Outside the Wire and is most popular for his role as the Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This film will be David Harbour’s fourth Netflix Original. Popular for his role as Chief Jim Hopper in Netflix’s Stranger Things that is coming back for its fourth season in May, Harbour was recently seen in Black Widow alongside Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh.

The rest of the cast includes Tig Nataro from Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, Uncle Drew’s Erica Rash, Jennifer Coolidge from The White Lotus, Niles Fitch from This Is Us, Crashing’s Isabella Russo, Faith Lord from Hope & Faith and Steve Coulter from Shotgun Wedding

What do we know about the production status of the film?

Filmmaker Christopher Landon has kept fans constantly updated about the filming schedule and production process. While filming was scheduled to begin from August 2021 and continue till September, it actually commenced on July 19th, 2021, according to Landon’s posts. They finished filming on November 10th, 2021 after a gruelling 65-day shoot.

When will the film premiere on Netflix?

Snippets from the film had been a part of Netflix’s teaser trailer announcing the 2022 line-up. The second-long montage at 01:31 saw David Harbour sliding across the windscreen of a car with a comical and baffled look on his face.

The kids stare at him with a look of dismay and horror while the final shot sees a pensive Anthony Mackie holding his phone to record something.

While a date has not yet been announced, fans are pretty excited to see Harbour and Mackie share the screen together.
