There’s no doubt The Crown is one of Netflix’s most polarising shows, and series five of Peter Morgan’s creation looks set to continue to trend. Although the penultimate season of the programme won’t air until November, somehow, it has already garnered controversy ahead of its release.
Reportedly, showrunners are already preparing to film the sixth and final season in August. The Crown was initially planned to end with five seasons, but Netflix changed their decision after having an in-depth meeting with the producer of the series, Sony and Morgan. Together, they decided a sixth season was necessary to “do justice to the richness and complexity of the story”.
Although the show traditionally delves deeper into the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, it also provides an intimate insight into the royal family against the changing socio-political backdrop. Additionally, it touches upon various family secrets and juicy scandals.
As it covers the various decades of the Queen’s reign, not only does the landscape keep changing but also the actors. Claire Foy was replaced as a young Queen by Olivia Colman, who played the middle-aged version of Elizabeth. Colman, in turn, has been replaced by Imelda Staunton to play the current version of the Queen.
The fifth season hones in on the tumultuous marriage between Princess Diana and Prince Charles before looking at her tragic death. Much to the chagrin of the royal family, the season is also set to air the controversial Panorama interview.
While not much has been revealed about the sixth season, it is being speculated that ot will give an insight into the Queen’s current reign.

When is The Crown season 6 coming to Netflix?
Netflix has not announced the release date for the sixth season of The Crown yet. However, by taking a closer look at the release dates of the previous seasons, we can take a wild guess.
The first season of The Crown premiered on November 4th, 2016, followed by the second season on December 8th, 2017. The third and fourth seasons both premiered in the month of November, in the years 2019 and 2020. The fifth season is scheduled to premiere in November 2022.
Based on the previous dates, the final season could release on Netflix sometime in November or December of 2023.
Who are the cast members of The Crown season 6?
Most of the cast members from the fifth season of The Crown will reprise their roles in the sixth season. However, Lady Diana will be a notable absentee due to her tragic death in the previous season.
The sixth season will see Imelda Staunton play Queen Elizabeth II for one last time. She will be joined by Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles etc.
The showrunners are, however, looking for a young “stunning” actress who can fit into the role of a teenage Kate Middleton, after issuing a casting call to hunt for “exceptional young actors” aged 16 to 21 to play Prince Harry and Prince William on the show. They must have some resemblance to the royals and are not required to have previous acting experience.
Emily in Paris actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu has been roped in to allegedly play the role of Charles Ritz’s widow in the fifth season. Whether she will still be playing the role in the sixth season is yet to be disclosed.

The series could also potentially focus on Prince William and Kate’s young love as students of the University of St Andrews. According to a source, the narrative of “the Duchess of Cambridge is an easy win for The Crown as it will get more people watching.”
However, Kate will not be the main focus of the storyline but be present as “a bonus”. William and Harry’s roles, however, are quite “significant” for the sixth and final season as it will chronicle how the late nineties and early 2000s affected the Princes’ lives as they loved through turbulent times and dealt with the personal tragedy of their mother’s untimely demise.
It will also most likely feature Prince Charles’s wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles which was met with public outrage.
