Will ‘Leanne’ return for a third season?
Comedian Leanne Morgan’s multi-cam sitcom Leanne arrived on Netflix with its highly anticipated second season, and like a loop, viewers are already curious whether she’s coming back for more.
Co-created by Morgan, Chuck Lorre, and Susan McMartin, the Netflix comedy series follows a churchgoing Tennessee grandmother whose life starts unravelling when her husband of 33 years abruptly leaves her for a younger woman. As she’s thrust into sudden late-in-life singlehood, she navigates unprecedented shock, menopause, and loneliness with heart and humour.
In the second season of the hit Netflix sitcom Leanne, the titular character and her sister Carol take in their elderly parents, rekindling their bond and learning to make peace with the harsh realities of ageing. At the same time, Leanne opens the door to new romantic possibilities as she grows close to FBI agent Andrew, letting go of her resentments towards her ex-husband Bill. In short, the sophomore season is all about moving on and new beginnings.
But does that mean Leanne will return with a third season? Well, Netflix hasn’t officially renewed the show for a third chapter yet, which is unsurprising since the second season just premiered on streaming.
As is the case with Netflix, it typically weighs in a few non-negotiable metrics before green-lighting any project for continuation, including viewership numbers and completion rates.
These conditions will likely impact Leanne’s fate, even though it is not unlikely for the streaming giant to announce early or rapid renewals; think Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black, which was renewed for a fourth season before the third could debut. But usually, renewals or cancellations can easily take up to months, meaning there’s no reason to frown yet.
Keeping all of that in mind, Morgan, who’s currently on tour with her new standup The Time of Our Lives, also recently conversed with TV Insider and detailed what she would like for her character in a potential follow-up instalment. “Victory. It would be great if she had a dream that she never fulfilled – get a job, start a business, start a nonprofit, go back to school.”
“I want Leanne’s character to fulfil her purpose that’s outside of being in her family. She did that, and she did a good job, and let’s honour her. Now, let’s let her find her real peace in what her purpose is outside of being a mama,” Morgan explained.
Although only time will tell whether the creator-comedian-actor’s dream will come true, for now, the first and second seasons of Leanne are streaming on Netflix. Make it a watch party!
