When will Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Sandman’ premiere on Netflix?

Netflix has been relatively quiet about the production of the upcoming show The Sandman. However, the author of the seminal comics on which the show is based, Neil Gaiman has been relatively vocal on his social media, keeping fans of the comics posted about this much-anticipated release.

Based on Gaiman’s revered comic series, this show will be helmed by Wonder Woman and Grey’s Anatomy showrunner, Allan Heinberg. Heinberg is working in collaboration with Gaiman. Gaiman has reassured fans by saying that they are merely “making Sandman” and “not reinventing it”, referring to the series being fairly faithful to the original text in narrative structure, essence and spirit.

The show will give an intimate insight into the various personifications of Death, Despair, Dream, Destiny, Delirium, Destruction and Desire that together constitute the Endless. The teaser shows a visibly dishevelled and angry Morpheus aka Dream looking dead into the camera. The show will begin with a cult attempting to kidnap Dream’s sister, Death and failing. However, they capture Dream and torture him for a long time.

While being held captive, Dream goes into a state of intense introspection and swear vengeance against those who wronged him.

Sins, madness, vulnerability and chaos galore, the series seems quite promising with its extensive ensemble and Gaiman’s cryptic tweets. While a definitive date is not yet known, here is what we know about The Sandman to date:

When will The Sandman premiere on Netflix?

While Netflix has not yet announced the official dates, the publication named IGN named June 3rd, 2022 to be the official date of release for the show, sending fans into a state of frenzy. However, Gaiman was quick to shoot down such rumours with a Twitter post. Check it out below:

The publication has removed the article ever since. However, the show is set to premiere sometime in 2022 and is a highly-anticipated release. While Netflix has released a 2022 line-up footage trailer for its upcoming 2022 Original film releases, it has not made one for the upcoming series which makes it difficult to understand when exactly the show will start streaming.

Let us all hope for a mid to late-2022 release!

What do we know so far about the production status of The Sandman

The show is set to have 11 hour-long episodes. Filming began in October 2020 and Gaiman took to Tumblr in September 2021 to talk about the conclusion of “principal photography”. This caused quite the stir among fans who could hardly keep calm about the release of the series.

Due to the abundance of violence, sex and crude language, the show has received a mature TV-MA rating in February 2022. It also has other tags associated with it, including self-harm, smoking and suicide.
