Netflix release first teaser trailer for 'The Sandman'

Netflix has been relatively silent over its production of The Sandman. While the author of the seminal comics, Neil Gaiman, who also serves as one of the executive producers of the show, has let out a few teasers. However, the official teaser trailer was revealed at the global Netflix event TUDUM on Sunday.

Based on Gaiman’s widely revered comic series, the show will be directed by Allan Heinberg, well-known for Grey’s Anatomy and Wonder Woman. Gaiman has said that they are “making Sandman”, “not reinventing it” which would mean that the series would stay faithful to the original text in spirit and plotlines.

The series has an incredible ensemble cast with Tom Sturridge in the role of the titular Sandman, the Lord of Dreams who watches over the realm of Dreaming. Boyd Holbrook will be seen as The Corinthian while Charles Dance and Roderick Burgess will take on the roles of the cruel and arrogant sorcerer and his son respectively.

Other cast members include Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Sanjeev Bhaskar. Asim Chaudhry, Nina Wadia, Emma Duncan, Jenna Coleman and more.

While the series will give a look into the various personifications of Death, Dream, Destiny, Desire, Destruction, Delirium and Despair who constitute the Endless, the teaser only shows Morpheus, AKA Dream. When a cult tries to kidnap Dream’s sister, Death, played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste, they fail. They end up capturing Dream from whom they want to “get all the help” they can, setting the premise for the series.

The teaser has a distinct and unique aesthetic that sets it apart from other comic book adaptations. It is the blend between myth and history.

We see a dishevelled Sturridge as Dream looking ominously at the camera, rage and anger palpable in his eyes.

The series will focus on Morpheus and his quest for revenge against those who wronged him during his captivity for 70 years by a sinister cult.  In captivity, he goes into a state of introspection, reflecting upon his past sins, vowing to undo them despite various setbacks.
