‘The Perfect Couple’ scene the cast didn’t want to be a part of
Last week, Netflix released the murder mystery series The Perfect Couple, based on Elin Hilderbrand’s book of the same name. However, early viewers quickly praised the series’ opening sequence despite it being something the cast initially didn’t want to do.
The Perfect Couple stars Nicole Kidman as a member of a wedding party who becomes a prime suspect after someone discovers a dead body moments before the ceremony is scheduled to begin. Directed by The Night Manager’s Susanne Bier, the show is a limited series that also stars Eve Hewson as Amelia Sacks, Billy Howle as Benji Winbury, and Dakota Fanning as Benji’s sister, Abby Winbury.
However, viewers have been thoroughly enjoying the show’s opening sequence, which sees Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, and Meghann Fahy perform a dance sequence to Meghan Trainor’s ‘Criminals’.
Although it appears as though the actors are enjoying themselves as a mere observer, they despised the idea the moment Bier revealed it to them and even set up a WhatsApp group to have “a mutiny” and protest the idea.
“Everyone was on that group saying they didn’t want to do this because we just didn’t understand,” Fahy told Variety, adding: “I actually have a really, really huge issue with learning choreography so I was very nervous about it.” Kidman added: “I didn’t feel like Greer would dance. I felt like Greer would watch.”
Ishaan Khatter also said that nobody could “make sense” of the choice as it felt too out of character to fit in with the show’s tone or themes. The only actor who seemed open to the idea was Schreiber, who said: “The entire cast had a mutiny about this idea except for me. I was already in my trailer practising the dance moves.”
Bier also told Variety that she initially wanted to do the dance sequence because it seemed out of place and that it would appear effective against the series’ otherwise serious and “gloomy” atmosphere. It seemed she eventually got her wish, as the cast did, in fact, deliver the performance, and it has since become a fan favourite aspect of the show.
The Perfect Couple is now streaming on Netflix.
