The sixth season of ‘Virgin River’ will be arriving in 2024
It has been announced that the hotly anticipated sixth season of Netflix’s Virgin River, will be coming to screens quicker than fans thought, in 2024.
Virgin River follows the story of Melinda ‘Mel’ Monro, who responds to an advert to work as a midwife and nurse in the rural Northern Californian town of Virgin River, with her deeming it a perfect place to start fresh and bury painful memories. However, it quickly becomes clear that her time in the town will not be a quiet one, with it almost instantly bringing its own set of problems, including Doctor Mullins who she helps run the clinic with, and disagrees with over how to do so.
This is just the start of it though, and over the ensuing five seasons, Mel finds herself dealing with a host of obstacles. Season five – the first part of which arrived in September 2023, and the second in November – contained a series of big moments, including Charmaine finally having her baby, Lizzie getting pregnant, and Wes’s body is finally found.
However, the season’s most gripping plot centres on Mel’s pursuit of her real dad. Picking up from where it left in part one, Mel and Jack set out to track him down. With a shocking twist in store, it transpires that Everett Reid is her father. This produces its own drama, with Mel now forced to choose between Doc who had agreed to walk her down the aisle, or Everett.
Although details about the show’s return have been scarce since November last year due to the delays from industry strikes and other factors at Netflix, things have now moved quickly for Virgin River season six. After filming commenced in February, audiences were originally told that the next instalment wouldn’t be arriving until early 2025.
Things have changed though, and Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos offered an update during the Q2 earnings review, confirming that Virgin River will be back in 2024. He said: “Just before the end of this year we’ve got Squid Game’s return, Emily in Paris‘s return, a new season of Selling Sunset, The Lincoln Lawyer, The Diplomat, Virgin River, Love is Blind, Ryan Murphy has an incredible new season of Monsters.”
Adding: “That’s all just coming up before the end of the year.” As it stands, no exact release date has been announced, but it’s certainly an exciting revelation for fans of the show.
Elsewhere, in February it was reported that Netflix is developing a Virgin River spinoff to further explore the story of Mel’s parentage.
