Netflix confirms that ‘The Sandman’ will end after season two

Netflix have confirmed that the forthcoming second season of The Sandman will be the last. After landing on the platform in 2022, it has now been announced that the gothic fantasy series is coming to an end.

In 2022, Netflix launched The Sandman, an adaptation of DC comic book series written by the Neil Gaiman. Starring Tom Sturridge in the titular role, alongside names like Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman and David Thewlis, the show is about to release its second season.

The show has been incredibly successful. After it’s release, the series sat in the top 10 most watched and stayed there for several weeks, racking up over 127.5 million hours watched The follow up season has been highly anticipated for some time now.

However, the show has been marred by allegations against it’s creator, Neil Gaiman. After being accused of sexual assault in 2024 as five women came forward, several of Gaiman’s projects have been dropped.

The writer has stepped away from Good Omens on Amazon Prime as they abandoned plans for their final season. Disney have halted any plans for a movie based on The Graveyard Book and a Coraline musical that was due to hit the stage has been scrapped.

Whether connected to these allegations or not, Netflix have also abandoned plans to make Dead Boy Detectives, which is part of The Sandman universe. However, it’s unknown whether this is simply down to uninspiring interest, or the platform desiring to distance itself from the writer.

Speaking to Netlflix, the team behind the show put a positive spin on its abrupt ending. The Sandman‘s showrunner Allan Heinberg said, “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
