Were you one of those who thought Netflix might take a break to rest before September rolled around? Because if that’s the case, you are horribly mistaken. Netflix practically raided the Edinburgh TV Festival with a brand new batch of UK TV announcements, and for the drama lovers of Netflix, there is enough in the box to look forward to.

Just take a look at the names starting with Kate Winslet, who has a new drama coming (which is already enough to get us excited), but then Top Boy is back in the conversation after bowing out in 2023, and fans are going gaga. Apparently one ending was not enough.

And before you dump all your hopes on these two, adding fuel to the fire is a new show announcement by the creator of Derry Girls! Can this get any better?

Before you get too excited, though, these are not all September releases because some are much further off. What? The streamer won’t show all its cards at once. Still, if you like knowing what Netflix is cooking before your feed is flooded with the trailers and whatnot, here is a quick overview of everything.

Kate Winslet leads The Unheard with Maxine Peake

Of all the names Netflix dropped at Edinburgh, this announcement is the one that will want you to pay the most attention because Kate Winslet and Maxine Peake in the same five-part drama is already a pretty convincing sell, but then you add Jack Thorne, from Adolescence, as the writer, and The Unheard becomes an impossible miss.

So what are we actually getting here? Winslet and Peake play sisters on the run who did something wrong. Initially, they were on their path for vengeance; however, the plan goes south, and the Netflix show will tell us what happened in between those lines. In short, not your straightforward chase thriller.

Barry Keoghan returns for Top Boy prequel Jonny Boy

Woah! Probably the most exciting news of the lot is that Top Boy is barging back into the room, because apparently, bowing out in 2023 was not the end of the story after all. Remember Jonny McGee, the Irish gangster, Barry Keoghan dropped into Top Boy’s final season and then left us drooling for more?

Well, Netflix had the same thought, because Jonny Boy is now getting a five-episode spin-off of its own, and this Netflix series will take us back before all that London business. We will take a peek into his life, his roots, and what made him the man we met in Top Boy. The sad part is that it’s far, far away, with production beginning in 2027, which means this comeback is far out of sight.

Jaq is getting her own Top Boy series

Hold your horses because if you thought Jonny Boy was Netflix’s only excuse to sneak back into Summerhouse… No such luck. Boom! We have another Top Boy series lined up, with Jasmine Jobson returning as Jaq for a separate six-part series; however, it will take the story forward rather than digging into the past, and that matters because Jaq was left in one hell of a position when Top Boy ended.

Much like others, Netflix is keeping the plot under wraps, which is highly infuriating, but Ryan Calais Cameron is writing the series, and Jobson is also on board as an executive producer, so you should know that good things clearly take time. It also starts filming in 2027, and if you were wondering whether the Top Boy universe had really shut up shop after 2023, well… clearly not.

Lisa McGee heads into Irish dancing with Jig

We want all the Derry Girls lovers to take a deep breath and calm down because their favourite creator is back with Jig. Lisa McGee has promised Netflix a six-part mockumentary about competitive Irish dancing, with best friends Cara and Fletcher at the struggling Sweeney School of Dance in Derry, facing off against a far stronger school from Florida. So technically, the subject of the show is rivalry, but since it’s McGee, there was never much chance of the comedy staying away.

There is no cast yet, so Netflix is still keeping us in the dark, but filming is set to begin in Northern Ireland in 2027. That’s the third show in line that’s going on the floor in 2027. Marbles brings Robert Popper back to family comedy

Next, we have Robert Popper going back into producing family comedy after Friday Night Dinner. Oh, now you’ve got people listening, because comedy fans know how seriously this household chaos is to be taken. The Netflix series is a story of Sam and Samantha, a middle-aged couple squeezed between children who they still need to look after and ageing parents who, well, demand just as much attention. Huh, the premise sounds fun, but the ones who are doing it for real know how exhausting it can get.

Robert Webb and Timothy Spall lead the cast, with Alexandra Roach, Denise Welch and Loo Brealey supporting them. Hurray for more domestic disaster, because Popper is once again here to charm us with a family comedy. After all that seriousness in the list, it’s nice to find some light comedy.

Roald Dahl’s adult stories are getting a Netflix series

Now, let us stop you before you start picturing chocolate factories or giant peaches and allow us to welcome you to another side of Roald Dahl, because Netflix is adapting his short fiction for adults into a six-part series, and, yes, if your mood’s changed a bit, consider it completely normal. This is the story of a young couple who get stranded in a faded seaside town, where they cross paths with people who are far too perturbing, which sounds much closer to Dahl’s darker streak than the children’s books most people grew up with.

Danny Brocklehurst is writing the series, with Naomi Scott and Josh Finan leading the cast, while Nicola Coughlan and Imelda Staunton are also involved. It’s high time we left childhood behind and entered Netflix’s Dahl spooky era.

How to Kill Your Family adds Clive Owen to the cast

Drum roll, please, because How to Kill Your Family has just made its cast even more dangerous. Yes, yes, the show was announced a few days ago, but now you have something even better to look forward to. Clive Owen has joined Anya Taylor-Joy in Netflix’s adaptation, with Orlando Norman and David Shields also coming aboard. Can this be any more exciting? A series with that very normal title now has faces, and the family sounds poisonous enough to grab all our attention.

Taylor-Joy will play Grace Bernard, the daughter of a billionaire who abandoned her and her mother, and knowing Joy and her characters by far, we know the kitty’s got claws. It’s obvious this woman’s returning for revenge, and when she does, it’s the relatives who cast her aside who are going to pay. Emma Moran, creator of Extraordinary, is writing the eight-episode series, while Netflix continues to guard the release date like a family secret. Come on, Netflix. You’ve got to give us something.

The Sidemen are heading Outside

There is nobody who has watched Netflix’s Inside and not screamed at the screen when somebody made a stupid decision with the prize money. And if you are a fellow screen-screamer, well, brace yourself, because Outside is taking that same thought and chucking it into the woods, where a fresh group of creators will compete for up to £1million, but any comfort they choose comes straight out of the prize money.

Yup, you guessed it right, the “shared” prize money. Imagine the kind of chaos it is going to create! One can only dream, but not for too long, because Netflix is turning into a very interesting reality. And as much as a fictional drama is to watch, nothing compares to a sort of scripted yet real-life drama.

Gary Lineker and Richard Osman join Beat Luke Littler

We have all fancied our chances against Luke Littler from the safety of our homes, but put £501,000 on the table, and things become a touch more serious. Netflix is giving 20 amateur darts players the chance to have a go in Beat Luke Littler, with Gary Lineker hosting and Richard Osman handling the analysis. It feels a bit mad when you remember these are ordinary players being handed one enormous shot at a life-changing payday, with the best darts player in the world standing between them and the cheque.

And look at that, we finally have a release date for something. The special streams live on October 30, and there is no complicated gimmick here: beat Littler and take the money home. Yeah, good luck with that.
