Production begins on Derry Girls’ creator Lisa McGee's new Netflix show

If you’ve been missing Derry Girls, which ended in 2022, fear not – creator Lisa McGee is making a new show. Titled How to Get to Heaven From Belfast, the upcoming Netflix series has just begun filming in Northern Ireland.

McGee’s newest project following the success of Derry Girls follows a group of adults in their thirties rather than teenagers, but it seems certain that the same humour and themes of navigating friendship will still be present.

The show centres around Saoirse, Robyn and Dara – played by Roísín Gallagher, Sinéad Keenan and Caoilfhionn Dunne respectively – three women who are subjected to a strange series of events after they discover that the fourth member of their childhood friendship group has died.

The Derry Girls writer expressed her joy to be working on a new project (via Variety), “I couldn’t be more excited to start production on How To Get To Heaven From Belfast.” She added, “I’ve loved writing Saoirse, Robyn and Dara — three flawed, funny women who are about to embark on the most thrilling and terrifying adventure of their lives. A mystery full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing and make you laugh out loud. Let’s go girls!”

There is no release date just yet, but with production underway, it shouldn’t be too long until we see a darker project from McGee on our screens. The writer began her career in the 2000s, writing several acclaimed plays before working within television. She was then employed to pen the third season of the popular show Being Human, which aired in 2011 to acclaim.

In 2018, however, she debuted Derry Girls, which she created with her own upbringing in the titular city as inspiration. The popular show follows a group of teenage girls from Derry (and their honorary English male friend) as they navigate the end of the Troubles while also dealing with typical adolescent issues.

Hugely successful, the show was acclaimed by critics while attracting a large fanbase. Derry Girls has also won several accolades such as British Academy Television Awards, an International Emmy and various Royal Television Society Awards.

While you wait for How to Get to Heaven From Belfast, you can still enjoy Derry Girls, which is available to stream on Netflix.
