Five Netflix shows to watch if you loved ‘Outer Banks’ season 5
The Pogues have returned for their final journey in the fifth and final season of the hit Netflix action-adventure teen mystery drama Outer Banks, and clearly, hell has broken loose.
The fifth instalment finds the Pogues at rock bottom following JJ’s devastating death in Morocco, which has not only snatched the heart of their crew, but also left them stuck in a land far from home. With Chandler Groff still at large and the Kooks doing everything in their capacity to ensure the Pogues don’t have a home to return to, the gang has to make peace with an unlikely alliance with Rafe to stay afloat.
But if you know that, having said your goodbyes in one stretch of sitting, the real question is: what now?
Well, if you’re feeling heartbroken about the journey coming to a close, let the hangover last a little longer with five Netflix shows to follow up after Outer Banks season 5.
Five Netflix shows to stream after Outer Banks season 5:
The Society (2019)
If you loved how Outer Banks leaves a group of youngsters to fend for themselves against all odds, The Society will hit home in more ways than one. The mystery drama follows a crew of teenagers from a wealthy Connecticut town who, upon returning early from a cancelled school trip, discover that every adult and child has vanished from the face of the earth without a trace. The town has become an isolated facsimile of their home, surrounded by dense, endless forests.
Teens being teens, the first thing that comes to their minds is, of course, a party and celebrations. But soon, they realise they need rules, organisation, and ration management to survive and maintain a civil code of conduct. While this leads student council president Cassandra to step up to the role, the very civilisation building up in The Society faces a major setback when Cassandra is found brutally murdered.
Locke & Key (2020-2022)
Get ready to swap out gold and historical shipwrecks of Outer Banks for magical keys hidden inside a mysterious ancestral home, and there you have your next watch: Locke & Key. Co-created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, the mystery drama follows the Locke siblings and their mother, Nina, who move into their ancestral house, Keyhouse, in Matheson, Massachusetts, following their father’s ruthless murder.
Upon arrival, they discover magical keys with distinct powers, such as the Head Key, which allows users to enter and alter anyone’s mind; the Anywhere Key, which allows them to travel anywhere seen before; and the Ghost Key, which separates souls from bodies. While Locke & Key leans into puzzle-solving, dangerous villains, and two young siblings trying to piece together a massive family secret, it makes a great transition for those seeking some more mysteries to solve.
On My Block (2018-2021)
Although the comedic impetus of On My Block is heavier than Outer Banks, it fits the bill as a perfect follow-up for several reasons. The teen-comedy drama follows four bright, street-smart teenagers – Monse, Cesar, Jamal, and Ruby – as they navigate the core group transition into freshman year and life in a fictional, rough inner-city Los Angeles neighbourhood called Freeridge, where their lifelong friendship is tested by local gang violence, poverty, and challenges of growing up.
As they deal with first loves, changing social statuses, and shifting dynamics, Cesar is pressured into joining a local gang, and Jamal’s relentless obsession with tracking down a fabled stash of RollerWorld roller rink money pushes the gang into dangerous treasure hunts. Much like the Pogues, they find themselves dragged into local mysteries and hunts, offering a blend of witty teen humour and suspenseful arcs.
Blood & Water (2020-2024)
Up next on our post-Outer Banks viewing recommendation list is the South African teen crime series Blood & Water. The mystery drama series follows Puleng Khumalo, a 16-year-old girl from Cape Town who transfers to an elite private school after finding herself at a party where she runs into Fikile Bhele, a local swimming star who bears a striking resemblance to herself, making her suspect that she could be her long-lost sister Phume, who was abducted as an infant.
After she earns a scholarship to Parkhurst College, she investigates her peers, family, and the school’s dark underbelly, which remains concealed underneath its reputation and glory. Blood & Water revolves around Puleng’s probe, which exposes a dark web of illegal adoption, human trafficking connections, and hidden secrets involving those closest to her.
One Piece (2023-Present)
But if what you’ll miss the most about Outer Banks is the sense of a crew embarking on wild, globe-trotting quests, Netflix’s live-action One Piece will save the day for you. The fan-favourite series follows the iconic Monkey D Luffy, an optimistic young pirate with rubber-like stretching abilities, who embarks on an adventure, setting sail from the East Blue to track down the mythical, legendary “One Piece” treasure.
Driven by a dream of becoming the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out to assemble a crew of his own called the Straw Hats, comprising the master swordsman Roronoa Zoro, the slick thief and navigator Nami, the sharpshooter Usopp, and the chivalrous cook Sanji. One Piece centres on Luffy and the Straw Hats’ journey through the treacherous waters as they navigate notorious regional villains and severe setbacks.
