The spooky mystery teen drama haunting Netflix

There really is no bad time to enjoy a good mystery story, and if it has a nice supernatural element to boot, then that is just a cherry on top for fans of both genres. The latest spooky mystery drama haunting the corridors of Netflix happens to be a Paramount+ original.

After premiering on March 9th, 2023, School Spirits has risen to the ninth spot on Netflix’s top ten series list in the US with its first season. Created by Megan and Nate Trinrud, the Paramount+ show made its Netflix debut recently, instantly garnering attention for its unique take on the afterlife.

School Spirits follows the eerie, but not really scary, journey of Maddie Nears (played by Peyton List), a teen girl stuck in the afterlife investigating her own mysterious death. The show, adapted from the Trinruds’ graphic novel in collaboration with Maria Nguyen, explores Maddie’s crime-solving quest as she navigates the challenges of high school in the afterlife. However, with each step towards the truth, Maddie unravels a web of secrets and lies that make her supernatural existence even more agonisingly confusing.

The main cast, including Peyton List as Maddie Nears, Kristian Flores as Simon Elroy, and Milo Manheim as the deceased Wally Clark, delivers stellar performances that have not gone unnoticed.

The series currently holds an 83 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising List’s performance and dubbing the paranormal mystery a solid watch. Daniel D’Addario of Variety wrote, “Without losing sight of the sorrow of Maddie’s story, School Spirits manages to be surprisingly sparky and fun — proof positive that there are new stories to tell about the institution no one would ever want to be stuck in for their entire afterlife.”

With its renewal for a second season, fans can look forward to more otherworldly adventures in the fictional town of Split River, Wisconsin.
