The five best Adam Sandler Netflix comedies

Murder Mystery (Kyle Newacheck, 2019)

You know what, or rather who, makes an Adam Sandler comedy marathon even better? Jennifer Aniston! So, if you’ve been a fan of the cult pairing from the Just Go With It days, Murder Mystery should inevitably be on your list. This 2019 crime comedy film follows a married couple, Nick Spitz, an NYPD officer and Audrey, a hairdresser, caught up in a series of unfortunate events.

Having been promised a trip to Europe during their wedding, Audrey finally sets off for her dream destination with Nick after their 15th wedding anniversary. However, a murder on a billionaire’s yacht turns their idyllic getaway into a mystery-solving caper. Although the storyline is quite generic, Sandler and Aniston’s comedic chops shine like a crown jewel.

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (Sammi Cohen, 2023)

Based on the eponymous 2005 young adult novel, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is a coming-of-age comedy drama co-produced by Adam Sandler, Tim Herlihy, Leslie Morgenstein, and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton. The film not only stars Sandler but also his wife, Jackie Sandler, and their daughters, Sadie and Sunny Sandler, making it a full family affair. The film is basically Bride Wars for high schoolers.

The story follows two best friends, Stacy Friedman and Lydia Rodriguez Katz, whose bat mitzvah takes a disastrous turn amid rivalry for the same heartthrob. Sandler portrays Stacy’s father, with whom the tensions are persistent from day one. And since this father figure is also about to make Happy Gilmore 2 a return for gold, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah seems like the perfect pick to get in the mood.

Hustle (Jeremiah Zagar, 2022)

Adam Sandler can incorporate a funny twist into every genre if he wishes, and with Hustle, he proved it again. The film follows a down-on-his-heels National Basketball Association (NBA) scout, Stanley Sugerman, who chances upon a promising, talented basketball player in Spain while watching a local pickup game. The story unfolds as Stanley tries to prepare Bo Cruz for the NBA draft, hijinks included.

Unlike stereotypical sports drama films, where you’ll find stunning moves, Hustle’s mundane charm pays off in gold. It doesn’t rely inherently on archetypes, which made it the most-viewed film on Netflix the first week of its release.

The Meyerowitz Stories (Noah Baumbach, 2017)

An Adam Sandler comedy watch-log remains incomplete without The Meyerowitz Stories. Although the rollout for this Noah Baumbach feature was controversial, the comedy-drama has been widely praised. The 2017 film follows the dysfunctional Meyerowitz family, Danny, Jean and Matthew, who navigate interpersonal dynamics and relationships while living under the shadow of their father.

The film picks up from Danny’s return to New York City following a period of estrangement from his family and unfolds as they all try to reconnect. This comedy-drama explores themes of family, identity, and the complexities of sibling relationships. Not to forget, it’s a star-packed story that amplifies the wit intake per scene.

Hubie Halloween (Steve Brill, 2020)

Leave it up to Adam Sandler to bring the fun in horror, and what he brings is what makes Hubie Halloween the entertaining watch it is. Co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, the film takes place in the town of Salem, Massachusetts, when kidnappings cast a spell on the region. Although the atmosphere is tense and reeks of fear, a deli worker with a taste for terror must slice through the mystery to save the day.

While the storyline is itself gripping and unique, it comes with the signature Sandler humour. Hubie Halloween also brings the spooky spirit with a bit of fun, making it a perfect round-out to the list of these comedies, displaying the actor’s full range.
