Fans of 'The Night Agent' excited by new Netflix deal

Following the success of Shawn Ryan’s hit Netflix thriller The Night Agent, new details have emerged about his latest deal with the streaming platform, signalling that the show could run for more seasons over a potential four-year period.

Ryan’s show was recently revealed to have been the biggest show of 2023, gaining a whopping 812.1million hours despite being released three months into the year, with Ginny and Georgia coming in second with 665.1million hours.

Following the announcement, Netflix’s co-chief executive Ted Sarandos commented, “We believe the viewing information in this report will give creators and our industry deeper insights into our audiences, and what resonates with them.”

The Night Agent is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk and follows FBI Agent Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso, who must hunt down a traitor working within the US government. Alongside Basso, the show also features Luciane Buchanan, Sarah Desjardins, Fola Evans-Akingbola, Hong Chau, D. B. Woodside and Eve Harlow.

Its instant success seems not to be lost on Ryan, who has been confirmed by Deadline to have just signed a four-year deal with Netflix despite allegedly being pursued simultaneously by Sony Pictures TV, NBCUniversal and Warner Bros.

Ryan is currently in a deal with Sony TV, which is slated to expire at the end of October this year. Given his strong loyal ties to Sony following a 13-year back-to-back partnership with the studio, Ryan’s decision was likely tough and incredibly competitive.

Deadline also strongly suggested that season three of the popular series is in the works, with the writers’ room officially opening in July. Extending the show also likely means Netflix will be able to test the interest in any potential spin-offs, an idea which has been floated since the show initially gained popularity in early 2023.

The second season will consist of 10 episodes, although a release date has not yet been revealed.
