Everything you need to know about ‘In the Hand of Dante’
Earlier in March 2026, Netflix snagged one of the most star-studded movies of recent memory, In the Hand of Dante, the epic crime drama directed by Oscar-nominated Julian Schnabel, which had its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in September last year.
Now, it’s officially set to arrive on Netflix this June, hot on the heels of its theatrical release in the United States earlier this month.
Essentially, In the Hand of Dante, based on Nick Tosches’s 2002 novel, is a genre-defying adaptation that blends the tropes of a gritty crime thriller with those of a tragicomedy.
As one of the most looked-forward-to additions to the Netflix library, it’s only natural to wonder whether the movie title refers to what first comes to every mind. So, to know for sure, here’s a rundown of everything you should know about In the Hand of Dante before its Netflix premiere this week.
What is the plot?
In the Hand of Dante, the forthcoming adaptation on Netflix, centres on two parallel stories intertwined by centuries. In the present day, the film opens with a seemingly original manuscript of Dante Alighieri’s legendary The Divine Comedy, which mysteriously ends up in the hands of a mob boss who approaches a gritty 21st-century author, Nick Tosches, to authenticate the text.
But as soon as the order comes his way, he’s hired to steal the manuscript, pushing him down the rabbit hole of the unforgiving underworld. As Nick navigates the dangerous criminal enterprise, the film turns back time to the 14th century, following Dante Alihjoero himself. In the Hand of Dante follows Nick and Dante as they find themselves linked across time, both embarking on a mission for love, beauty, and the divine and underscoring how history repeats itself.
Who is in the cast?
In the Hand of Dante has been brought to life by a heavyweight Hollywood ensemble led by Oscar Isaac, who plays a dual role as the modern-day author Nick Tosches and 14th-century poet Dante Alighieri. Meanwhile, Gal Gadot stars as Giulietta and Gemma, opposite Isaac. The cast also features Al Pacino as Uncle Carmine, Gerard Butler as Louie/Pope Bonifacio VII, Jason Momoa as Rosario, Martin Scorsese as Isaiah, and John Malkovich as Joe Black.
Franco Nero as Don Lecco, Sabrina Impacciatore as Dr Sussanna Pulice, Louis Cancelmi as Lefty/Guido Novello Da Polenta, and Benjamin Clementine as Mephistopheles round out the cast.
