Why you should be excited for Oscar Isaac’s ‘The Roman’

Fresh off his spectacular stints in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and the second season of the hit Netflix anthology drama BEEF, Oscar Isaac is now ready to dip his toes in Sin City for Netflix, thanks to The Roman.

The Golden Globe winner joins as a star and executive producer of the forthcoming drama, which explores the high-stakes, cutthroat world of Las Vegas casinos. While the show was originally announced a week ago, the new eight-episode series now has an official title, alongside new faces.

Creators, showrunners, and executive producers Brian Koppelman and David Levien are behind The Roman, who are anything but strangers to the world of gambling. The dynamic duo had their screenwriting debut with the poker thriller Rounders, and eventually joined forces for the heist thriller Ocean’s Thirteen set in Vegas.

There’s no doubt that The Roman is getting backed up by the industry’s finest. And to top that off, Martin Scorsese, who explored the canyons of Las Vegas in Casino and executive-produced Boardwalk Empire for HBO, serves as an executive producer, underscoring the casino drama’s starry pedigree. As for the rest of the details? Here’s a rundown of what to expect from the upcoming Netflix series.

What is the plot?

The Roman is an eight-episode series set in the high-stakes, make-or-break world of present-day Casino business in Las Vegas. Although it represents a far more modernised and advanced version, it simultaneously carries forward a legacy of danger on which it was built. At the heart of the Netflix series is Robert “Bobby Red” Redman, the president of the most luxurious hotel casino in town, who must move mountains to secure his position and break new ground.

Who is in the cast and crew?

Netflix has roped in Oscar Isaac to portray Bobby Red, the casino president at the centre of The Roman. The role marks his new creative partnership with Netflix, which gives the streamer first-look rights on projects with Isaac, Elvira Lind and Gena Konstantinakos’ production company Mad Gene. In addition to Isaac playing the lead, Betty Galpin stars as Marla Blake, Alec Baldwin as Paul “Primo” Clark, and David Costabile as Bill Saverick in the upcoming series.

Brian Koppelman and David Levien serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. Martin Scorsese and Sikelia Productions, Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn for Expanded Media, Paul Schiff, Beth Schacter, Oscar Isaac, JC Chandor, and Kerry Orent also executive produce the series. Additionally, Chandor will direct the first two episodes.
