Everything we know about Netflix’s 'Bridgerton' spin-off, 'Queen Charlotte'

Netflix’s very popular Emmy-nominated series Bridgerton, based on Julia Quinn’s eponymous book series, garnered a massive fan following due to their intimate, melodramatic look at the lives of the upper echelons of British aristocrats.

Those same fans were thrilled when the announcement came that the main series was set to get a spin-off prequel series titled Queen Charlotte. The show will most likely arrive in 2023 but that hasn’t stopped the hype train rolling into town.

The upcoming spin-off is set to be a single-season long mini-series that will provide a proper premise to the very popular main show. The main show has been renewed for a four-season run by Netflix and is currently in production for season two which will most likely hit the streaming giant next year.

The prequel series will give us a walkthrough of Queen Charlotte’s remarkable life that helped established her iconic stature. It may well prove to be a bit of fan lip service, but who are we to argue with royalty?

Besides a spin-off series, the main series is a part of an expanded deal that will culminate into VR experiences, video games and other in-person adventures owing to the massive popularity of the series.

Ahead of the series’ release on Netflix, here is everything we know about the series:

Everything we know about Netflix’s Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte

Who is helming the Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte?

Shonda Rhimes, who served as the executive producer for Bridgerton, will now serve as the writer on Queen Charlotte. Tom Verica and Betsy Beers will be the producers of the new spin-off.

They have previously collaborated with Rhimes on Bridgerton itself as well as How To Get Away With Murder and Grey’s Anatomy

What can be expected from the Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte?

According to the official logline, the series will focus on the life of young Queen Charlotte and the blossoming romances in her life. It will also provide an insight into the lives of young Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world,” said Bela Bajaria, the head of global TV on Netflix, adding, “and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton”.

The prequel series has not yet revealed its official title but the various sources have confirmed it to be Queen Charlotte. Since the original book series Bridgerton is based on the real history of the aristocratic families, there are certain things that can be expected from the series.

NuttyHistory, in their YouTube video, has compiled a series of facts regarding the young Queen who was said to be “stranger than fiction” in reality. The video comprises various interesting and whacky facts, including:

  • How the Queen married the King only six hours after meeting him while living as the Princess in Germany
  • How she recognised a young Mozart to be a powerhouse of talent
  • How and whether she was the first monarch of colour in the United Kingdom, an absolutely groundbreaking moment in the history of the British monarchy

Fans are already excited to see if the series will show the discovery of Mozart as well as answer various burning questions. As of now, one can only speculate.

Who are the cast members on the Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte?

As of now, the cast names have not yet been announced. Since it is a prequel series, the older cast members from Bridgerton will most likely not make a comeback. However, Golda Rosheuvel, who played the aged Queen Charlotte in the main series, might make a return for certain scenes.

When will the Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte begin filming?

The prequel series will have a limited number of episodes and will begin production in January 2022.

Filming will take place predominantly in London. However, it is unknown whether they will be using Netflix’s Shepperton Studios for the same.

The second season of Bridgerton has been filming all across 2021 and it is therefore assumed that the prequel will begin filming shortly after the production for the second season of the main series comes to a conclusion. This will also lead to the commencement of production for season three.

When will the Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte release?

Last year, the main series was a wonderful Christmas present for Netflix users. We can only hope for the spin-off to grace the streamer next winter. However, since production will begin in January, a 2023 release seems more plausible.
