The Emmy-nominated creator of Sirens and Maid, Molly Smith Metzler, is fanning the flames of a curious Netflix comeback with The Retrievals, helmed by Bad Bridgets star Emilia Jones as Gabby Clemente.

In the upcoming series, Metzler chronicles a disturbing series of events that unfolded at Yale Fertility Centre when several women arrived with hopes of becoming mothers, only to leave scarred for their lives.

Adapted from Susan Burton’s acclaimed New York Times and Serial Productions podcast, The Retrievals is a highly anticipated adaptation that details one woman’s campaign against a fertility centre that operated on her and nearly 100 other women without anaesthesia. The series is written and executive-produced by Metzler, with Jones portraying Gabby, a New Haven bartender and teacher whose life crumbles due to a terrifying egg retrieval surgery.

What Gabby discovered next not only confirmed her suspicions but also prompted her to launch a crusade against the clinic when she learned that a nurse was actually stealing vast amounts of fentanyl. Subsequently, Gabby reached out to other victims, banding together to lead a game-changing legal battle against Yale University.

Inspired by the Peabody Award-winning New York Times podcast, The Retrievals captures that one woman’s movement of awakening against Yale Fertility Centre and demands for justice for operating on hundreds of women without anaesthesia because a nurse stole their fentanyl. The forthcoming Netflix show highlights the power of an unlikely community that raised its voice against one of the most notable institutions of the country.

Vulture previously crowned The Retrievals as one of the best podcasts of 2023, with Nicholas Quah writing, “[Susan] Burton and company are unsparing in their critiques of the system, but they also leave room at the edges to poke at even thornier subject matter, like the sometimes destructive tension between bodily autonomy and motherhood itself.”

For those oblivious, Burton’s podcast opens with stories of women who have suffered greatly one way or another at the hands of systemic and institutional failures and negligence. No wonder TIME called The Retrievals “a masterwork in investigative reporting.”

Although Netflix stays tight-lipped about further cast developments except for Jones, the A-list name is quite a starter pack to begin with. Dorin Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Margot Robbie are executive producing the series on behalf of LuckyChap, alongside Caitlin Roper of The New York Times. Colin McKenna and Burton serve as executive producers as well.
