Duffer brothers: “We have some ideas” about a potential ‘Stranger Things’ spin-off

As we inch closer to the release date of the first volume of the fourth season of Stranger Things, Netflix viewers can no longer contain their excitement. Since its release in 2016, Stranger Things has become a cultural phenomenon as well as the Duffer brothers, namely Matt and Ross’s nostalgic ode to the 1980s and the genre of sci-fi.

Starring Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Gaten Matarazzo and others, the show is executive produced by Shawn Levy. The trailer hints at a fiery and violent fourth season that will tie various loose ends together.

Now, the Duffer brothers have hinted at a potential spin-off to the show since each of the characters has individual opportunities for their respective narrative arcs to add to the heightened drama and tension within the series.

Previously, they had confirmed that the series would come to an end with the fifth season. Now, they have spoken to SFX about a potential spin-off that would further explore other elements in the fictional town of Hawkins in Indiana. While they said that they have “some ideas”, the directing duo have been questioning themselves if the “idea” is “exciting enough that we feel the pull of wanting to do it again?”

Matt added, “I want to feel the pull of ‘God I really want to do this. I feel really, really excited about this.’ So that’s why we’re being careful about what that is and whether we move forward with it or not.”

While most spin-offs usually serve as a deep dive into an existing title, the Duffer brothers want to focus on a totally new concept for the new series. Ross Duffer said, “The key for us is that it needs to feel like its own distinct thing, not that we’re just retreading what we’ve already done,” before teasing, “I do think we have something pretty exciting, so we’ll see.”

The nine episodes of the fourth volume of Stranger Things will arrive on May 27th to answer burning fan questions and conspiracies.

While Wolfhard has teased an “intense” and “dark” season, Millie Bobby Brown has spoken about how this has been “the hardest season” she has ever filmed.

She clarified, “There have been some of the scariest things that I’ve ever seen as a human, which you guys will get to see for sure. I’ll get to tell more stories and touch on my experiences as a person filming on the set with these legitimate scary things.”
