Christina Ricci, best known for her incredible work on Addams Family, will be reprising the role in the shape of an older Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton’s upcoming Netflix series Wednesday. The alum has been gushing over the new project and has praised Burton and the work of her new successor, Jenna Ortega.
In Burton’s series, Yes Day, actress Ortega stars as the iconic Wednesday Addams and has shown her incredible transformation on Instagram. Aware of the “pressure” building on her to reprise such a legendary character, Ortega has reportedly undergone the “most physical transformation” for her part.
Burton’s live coming-of-age comedic adaptation of the Addams Family film will focus on Wednesday’s years in her parents’ school, Nevermore Academy, as she still morbidly obsesses over death while partaking in various adventures and escapades.
Netflix’s lengthy logline promises Wednesday to begin a new chapter at Nevermore Academy after being evicted from eight schools in five years. With four main cliques filled with general outcasts, namely Fanngs, Furs, Stoners and Scales, Wednesday will find herself in many misadventures while stumbling upon untold secrets about her family’s past.
Also starring Luiz Guzman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Gwendoline Christie, Emma Myers and others, the series will premiere sometime in 2022.
Ricci has called Ortega “incredible” in the moody and brooding Wednesday role. Talking about Ortega’s transformation, she said, “I saw some of the wardrobe photos before I went [to set], so I knew [what she looked like in character], and I was like, it’s such a great modern take on Wednesday. It’s so true tonally to the heart and soul of [the original], but it’s then it’s incredibly modern, and it’s great.”
Ricci said about Burton: “It’s super fun. I loved working with Tim [Burton]. I worked with Gwendolyn Christie. It was amazing.”
