Hot on the heels of the commercial smash but critical damp squib of Army of the Dead, comes the prequel Army of Thieves.
With Army of the Dead being revealed as Netflix’s most-viewed film of recent times, with a reported whopping 36% of users watching the movie, a spin-off was always on the cards.
The forthcoming prequel was revealed at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and it will see Matthias Schweighöfer direct himself as he reprises his role of the notorious safecracker Ludwig Dieter.
The film seems to have a change of tact, being described by producer Deborah Snyder as “more of a romantic comedy heist film than anything else”.
The official synopsis for Army of Thieves reads: “Small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.”
More films are also expected to follow in the wake of this outing after it was revealed that Netflix had signed a two-year first-look deal with Zack Snyder over his zombie franchise.
