You can now transfer Netflix user profiles to existing accounts

Amid the password-sharing crackdown row, Netflix has introduced a new feature that allows users to transfer their user profile to an existing account. This gives subscribers more flexibility in managing their streaming preferences.

Previously, users were only able to transfer profiles to brand-new accounts. This latest update comes as Netflix continues its crackdown on password-sharing, aiming to ensure that only authorised users can access the service.

The profile transfer feature introduced last year enables users to migrate their personalised recommendations, viewing history, ‘My List’, saved games, and other settings seamlessly. It is now available to all subscribers worldwide.

A Netflix rep told Variety, “This was a much-requested feature from our members and we’re excited to roll it out to everyone.”

The ability to transfer profiles to existing accounts opens up various possibilities. For example, if you have moved out of your parents’ house and want to retain your personalised Netflix experience, you can transfer your profile to your new roommate’s primary Netflix account.

Timi Kosztin, Netflix’s product manager for product innovation, mentioned in a blog last fall, “People move. Families grow. Relationships end. But throughout these life changes, your Netflix experience should stay the same.”

Netflix’s willingness to facilitate profile transfers is aligned with its account-sharing rules, which were tightened earlier this year. The streaming giant has started notifying customers in multiple countries, including the US, that users who live outside their households must be added as extra members or subscribe to their own accounts.
