Will ‘Lovesick’ return for a second season on Netflix?
Modern love stories may come across as relatable, but historical romances are guaranteed to be iconic, just like Lovesick on Netflix.
Directed, produced, and written by Catalina Aguilar Mastretta, the Netflix Original period drama opens at the brink of the Mexican Revolution, telling the story of Emilia Sauri, an aspiring doctor, who faces an unlikely dilemma: choosing between Daniel Cuenca, her childhood best friend, who prioritises revolution over everything, even her, and Antonio Zavalza, a young doctor who seeks peace amidst war.
Lovesick doesn’t just unpack a historical narrative against the backdrop of a national revolution; it exposes Emilia’s evolution. The show premiered on Netflix on September 2nd, with all episodes landing at once to convince viewers to complete Emilia’s journey in one sitting.
Now that they actually have, the audience cannot help but wonder whether her chapter truly ends there or whether she returns to narrate more.
Well, as of yet, Netflix hasn’t renewed Lovesick for a follow-up season, which isn’t that shocking, considering the streaming giant weighs several non-negotiable metrics before greenlighting a show for continuation, including completion rates and viewership numbers.
Usually, renewals and cancellations can take up to months. However, exceptions do exist, such as The Gentlemen, which may have arrived with its second season a day after Lovesick, but scored a rapid third-season renewal before the touchdown.
But in most cases, when it comes to renewals, the cast or crew do give hints, which is, unfortunately, not true for Lovesick. It’s not just Netflix; no other production members have publicly discussed a potential future season as of now.
In fact, several listings for the Mexican period drama describe it as a one-and-done season comprising seven episodes, inspired by Ángeles Mastretta’s novel. And since the source material is a standalone piece of literature rather than part of a book series, the chances of follow-up seasons feel all the less likely.
Then again, that doesn’t say for sure what actually awaits Lovesick’s future, since the show has already drawn comparisons to long-running period romances, including Outlander. However, one thing is for sure: since the series just premiered, it’d best not get ahead of ourselves, as Netflix is well capable of pulling rabbits out of its hat and defying viewers’ predictions. So, until an official announcement arrives, it’s wise to wait, watch, and stay tuned for more updates!
