Lovesick on Netflix offers the audience a front-row seat to the life of an aspiring female doctor who navigates societal pressures, a dream she refuses to give up, and a complex love triangle at the brink of the Mexican Revolution.

Adapted from Ángeles Mastretta’s eponymous novel, the Mexican period drama follows Emilia Sauri, a medical genius who works at her father’s apothecary, harbouring dreams of becoming a professional doctor. Set a month before the Mexican Revolution in Puebla, a period defined by its tumultuous political environment, she strives to make her unconventional dream a reality when people are advised to stay in their lanes.

Just as that doesn’t stop Emilia from dreaming, it also doesn’t prevent her childhood best friend, Daniel, whom she’s secretly in love with, from engaging in revolutionary activities. Although she doesn’t like this side of him, she has to deal with it- better yet, keep up with it.

As the shifting tides of the revolution continue to affect Daniel’s presence, during one such time of absence, Emilia is introduced to Antonio Zavalza, a young doctor who seeks peace amidst war. While they grow close, Daniel returns, and he and Emilia finally confess their true feelings to each other. But do they end up together?

Whom does Emilia choose in Lovesick?

Not long after, Daniel leaves once again, prompting Emilia to venture out of Puebla to study medicine in the Mexican period drama, Lovesick. In fact, months roll by without any word from him until she receives a letter from his friend informing her of his disappearance. Despite being presumed dead, Emilia heads to the battlefront to find Daniel. It is in the small village of Chihuahua that she ultimately locates him, barely alive, but alive.

As Emilia nurses him back to health over the next few months, she opens a small facility with Daniel’s help before deciding to head back to the city. However, while on their way back, his priorities yet again get in the way, pushing Emilia to pull the plug on the relationship this time and return to Puebla.

Back in Puebla, Antonio and Emilia start a relationship, seemingly indicating that she chose Zavalza over Daniel by the end. However, a fast-forward sequence to the 1960s shows that she started a family with an unnamed man, leaving it unclear whether it was someone entirely different or someone between Daniel and Zavalza, who cannot be recognised due to age.

The character also has no mention in the end credits scene, and the ambiguity is understandably a killer one. However, Lovesick also underscores that whoever one chooses in life may not always be the person they choose in love. So, even though Emilia does end up with Zavalza in a way, every flag suggests Daniel is the love of her life.

The last time they meet on screen attests to that, as he wakes up to find a letter from Emilia that adds to the viewers’ conviction and explains why the show is named Lovesick.
