Will ‘Balaraw: Blood Island’ return for a second season?
Netflix made a bold decision to wrap up the Halloween season with one final horror show: Balaraw: Blood Island.
Released on October 29th, the Filipino atmospheric horror series centres on Sabina, who follows a mysterious clue in hopes of finding answers about her mother’s disappearance years ago, which leads her to the ominous, uncharted Blood Island. But instead of a straightforward answer, she uncovers a web of deep-seated, dark family secrets that challenges her own identity.
Balaraw: Blood Island is a supernatural thriller that blends local myths, long-standing superstitions and folklore, and dark family history into a terrifying tale that stays long after the credits roll. So, almost obviously, the most-asked question right now is whether the series will return for a second season.
Well, Netflix has yet to renew Balaraw for a sophomore season. But that’s not exactly shocking, given the mystery thriller just hit Netflix shelves.
As is tradition with the streaming giant, Netflix usually weighs a few non-negotiable metrics, including total viewership and completion rates, before announcing a renewal or cancellation. In short, the waiting period is routine standard for all Netflix Original shows.
Of course, in exceptional cases, Netflix goes for rapid renewals within a few weeks. In fact, some shows score renewals before the latest instalment can debut. However, it usually takes multiple weeks, if not months, to formally announce a cancellation or renewal.
If everything goes right and the show maintains persistent momentum on Netflix’s global top 10, Balaraw: Blood Island could realistically get a renewal announcement before the year ends. However, only time will tell what awaits the show’s future.
On the bright side, Netflix hasn’t billed Balaraw as a limited series, which increases the likelihood of a second season. What’s even better is that the official Netflix page labels both its teaser and trailer as season one. So, the door for a potential follow-up stays ajar.
Additionally, creator and director Rae Red has publicly highlighted her interest towards Filipino folklore and belief systems woven into everyday life, and Janine Gutierrez spoke about the strong Filipino myth flowing in the show. As a result, Balaraw can easily explore stories and premises beyond a single missing-person case.
But for now, Netflix users have to hold on to their horses until an official confirmation arrives for Balaraw: Blood Island. Till then, watch the debut season, now streaming on Netflix!
