Will ‘A Couple of Lies’ return for a second season?

Netflix’s newest psychological thriller, A Couple of Lies, brings a righteous curtain call to a blockbuster October, and nothing can change our minds.

The four-episode Swedish adaptation of Stefan Ahnhem’s novel follows two couples as they swap houses to take a break from their everyday lives and work on their struggling marriages. But what starts as a relaxing getaway soon spirals into a dangerous game of surveillance, deceit, and, of course, betrayal from the ones they think are closest.

Directed by Kasper Barfoed, A Couple of Lies AKA Bytet centres on Carl and Helene as they swap their home in the Swedish archipelago for a sun-drenched villa in Sicily, owned by Scarlett and Adam, a couple they have never met. But as they settle into each other’s homes, eerie details surface, leaving each and everyone on edge.

Although it’s usually difficult to wrap high-stakes psychological warfare into four episodes, Netflix delivers in spades with A Couple of Lies. So, it makes sense that viewers are already curious whether a second season is in the cards.

Well, Netflix has yet to address a potential second season. But that’s not very out of character for the streamer since the show just hit Netflix shelves on October 30th.

Additionally, Netflix typically weighs a few non-negotiable metrics, such as total viewership data and completion rates over a said period, before formally announcing a renewal or cancellation. Although Netflix does rapid renewals in exceptional cases, it usually takes weeks, if not months, to officially announce these updates.

That said, another important point needs consideration. Netflix has billed A Couple of Lies as a limited series, meaning the show should ideally be one-and-done. Then again, since Netflix has had a change of heart about original limited series, think BEEF, The Beast in Me, and Untamed, it is hard to say whether the Swedish psychological thriller is actually done for good or returning for more.

Story-wise, A Couple of Lies pulls the curtain on the central mystery with a clean wrap. The manipulators are unmasked, a long-standing affair is unveiled, and several body bags are found. Although one of the main perpetrators is let go on humanitarian grounds, it is assumed that with Swedish and Italian law enforcement tailing her, she won’t evade police for long. In a way, that’s a complete package.

While the show is most likely done for good, in any case, if Netflix and the creators decide to build on the existing theme, there could be a follow-up. So, until an official confirmation arrives, fans will have to hold their horses!
