Why you should watch Caleb McLaughlin’s ‘Goat’ on Netflix right now
For months, people kept bringing up KPop Demon Hunters because literally nobody expected a Netflix animated film to make a killing.
Netflix animations usually arrive, and people watch them once over a boring afternoon and then forget they even exist a week later. But KPop Demon Hunters turned into one of those films people would not stop talking about online. Now, Netflix looks like it wants that exact same reaction again with its new project, Goat, and everyone is listening.
The film finally came on Netflix on May 14th, and people seemed interested almost immediately because the whole story is basically about this tiny goat trying to survive in a sport full of massive predators. Imagine walking into the biggest professional league possible while everybody around you looks capable of flattening you in two seconds and still acting like you are here to be the GOAT, pun intended. That is literally Will Harris (the goat) through the entire trailer, which is probably why people are already rooting for him.
Like, sorry, but a goat entering the most violent professional sport imaginable because he genuinely believes he can become the greatest player alive? That is such a ridiculous underdog premise that people are obviously going to latch onto it immediately. By the way, it is based on a book, “Funky Dunk” by Chris Tougas.
And the most fun part here is Caleb McLaughlin being the voice of that goat, and all of a sudden, it makes sense. Because if you watched Stranger Things, then you already know Caleb is really good at playing characters audiences naturally root for. Lucas Sinclair could have easily stayed the sarcastic friend in the background, but by the later seasons, he ended up becoming one of the emotional centres of the entire show.
So putting him in a film where he plays this tiny athlete constantly trying to prove himself against giant monsters honestly feels like perfect casting. You can already tell Will is going to be one of those characters audiences get attached to really fast because everybody loves an underdog who is not ready to back off at any cost.
And can we talk about the rest of the cast for a second, because why is Netflix filling it with the real goats out there?
Let’s see, we have Gabrielle Union voicing Black Panther superstar Jett Fillmore. Stephen Curry is producing the film while also voicing a giraffe called Lenny Williamson, which sounds absolutely insane out of context. Then we have David Harbour, Nicola Coughlan, Nick Kroll, Jennifer Hudson, Dwyane Wade and A’ja Wilson in the cast list as well. Okay then. Netflix clearly knows this film has potential because it’s not bringing so many amazing people together just like that.
But honestly, the thing people are probably going to notice first is the animation because, wow. The second the action scenes start, you can immediately see the Spider-Verse influence all over this thing. Artists connected to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse worked on Goat, too, and it definitely shows. Every frame is packed with movement, colour, speed, and detail with so much precision that you’re just going to enjoy the visuals.
