
Why you should be excited for the Japanese period drama, ‘Straight to Hell’
Netflix is bringing Straight to Hell this April, which unpacks the untold life of one of modern Japan’s most influential and controversial figures, Kazuko Hosoki.
Netflix most recently released a teaser trailer, which you can check out below, accompanied by a teaser art and unveiled the lineup of additional cast members attached to the upcoming series.
Co-directed by Tomoyuki Takimoto and Norichika Oba, best known for their works in The Brain Man and Gannibal season two, respectively, Straight to Hell captures Hosoki’s life with a focus on realism. In fact, Oba has been involved with the project right from the start and has contributed extensively to the research that shaped Hosoki’s character in Straight to Hell.

What is the plot?
Straight to Hell, the upcoming Japanese drama, follows the life of Kazuko Hosoki, born in the aftermath of WWII and plunged into poverty and the nightlife at a young age. When she was in her twenties, she was already overseeing multiple successful nightclubs in Ginza, earning her the nickname ‘The Queen of Ginza.’ Driven by the skills and instincts she honed there, she gradually reinvented herself as a fortune-teller.
Hosoki rose to fame with her self-created Six Star Astrology and soon became a household name, thanks to multiple bestselling books and TV appearances. Although she was respected by some and feared by others, the legacy she left behind has forever been a source of fascination and controversy. Straight to Hell unfolds over six decades, tracing Hosoki’s life in post-war Japan through the nation’s economic boost and into the “bubble era,” when media attention and money reached unprecedented heights.”
Who is in the cast?
Erika Toda stars as Kazuko Hosoki, portraying her from age 17 through 66. Meanwhile, Sairi Ito co-stars as Minori Uozumi, a writer commissioned to write Hosoki’s biography. The cast additionally includes Toma Ikuta, Eita Okuno, Kentaro Tamura, Ayumu Nakajima, Gaku Hosokawa, Kazuya Takahashi, Tetta Sugimoto, and Renji Ishibashi.
Toko Miura as Showa-era superstar singer Chiyoko Shimakura, Yasuko Tomita, Kimiko Yo, and Miwako Ichikawa have also joined the cast of Straight to Hell, among others.
