Netflix’s popular coming-of-age Original series, Never Have I Ever is a brilliant creation by the talented duo, Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher. After two incredible seasons, the show has been renewed for a two-season run, with each season focusing on a particular year of high school.
This comedy traces the journey of a young Indian-American girl called Devi in high school as she navigates through grades, friendships, jealousy, aspirations, young love and subsequent love triangles while grappling with the tragic demise of her father and the constant bickering with her mother while trying to find her identity.
The show is full of Kaling-like humour and has become hugely popular due to its relatable content as the young protagonist struggles to fit in and voices out her concerns about her lack of social skills, confidence and more. It hilariously portrays the generation gap between Devi and her immigrant mother, who tries to instil certain Indian values in her.
While we have compiled everything we know about the upcoming season which is scheduled to premiere on August 12th, 2022, here, we have certain expectations from the show.
Starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Poorna Jagannathan, Darren Barnet, Jaren Lewison, Richa Moorjani, Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Megan Suri and Anirudh Pisharody among others, with John McEnroe as the narrator, the show will soon be back for some riotous fun.
Here is what we can possibly expect from season three:
What we can expect from Mindy Kaling’s ‘Never Have I Ever’ season 3
Will Devi and Paxton finally be in a stable relationship?
While Devi was having a hard time choosing between Ben and Paxton in season two, after plenty of turmoil and obstacles, she finally patches things up with Paxton during the school’s winter dance. Season three will probably see Devi and Paxton in a healthy and stable relationship, as hinted by one of the first-look images that show them holding hands in the school corridor while others look on, in shock and awe.
However, Mindy Kaling has always talked about how she does not know what the universe has in store for the couple. “I’ve watched enough romantic comedies that it’s not interesting unless it’s constantly shifting and changing. Having the lead character be happy in love is not super interesting to me,” Kaling confessed, before adding, “It’s more suspenseful when we don’t know.”
This makes us wonder if they will have to walk through a fire of insecurities and anxieties yet again before finally finding peace in their relationship.
Will Ben invest time in his relationship with Aneesa?
While Ben was dating the new Indian girl, Aneesa, he was visibly missed by Paxton and Devi’s budding relationship. In the first season, Ben was in love with Devi and they even share a kiss at the end of the season, complicating Devi’s feelings for her potential love interest, Paxton, and her best friend, Ben.
The third season will probably see Devi and Paxton in a comfortable relationship. Whether Ben will pursue his heart’s calling and sabotage their relationship or simply learn to be happy with Aneesa is something we are hoping the season to explore.
Will Devi start another love triangle?
Devi does not have good control over her feelings and emotions. She has always found her romantic feelings going wayward and that is completely normal during adolescence.
The first look photos show a new character named Des. He is a new student from a private school who is a new transfer to Devi’s high school. Whether his arrival will throw our ditzy protagonist’s feelings into turmoil and add more chaos is worth noting. Or will Des catch someone else’s attention? Only time will tell.
Will Devi and Aneesa become friends?
Devi absolutely loathed Aneesa when season two introduced her. From being the only Indian girl in class to having competition from someone visibly smarter and more likeable, Devi’s insecurities were triggered. Ben and Aneesa’s budding relationship was the last straw for Devi who had an intense rivalry with Aneesa in the second season.
However, the first look photos show Aneesa hanging out in Devi’s bedroom with her friends Elanor and Fabiola, thus hinting at a blossoming friendship. Now that the two Indian girls form an alliance together, they might end up going on crazier (mis)adventures.
Will the season feature intense academic pressure?
Never Have I Ever has primarily focused on teenage romance and angst throughout the seasons. While grappling with the grief of her father’s sudden demise, Devi is seen struggling with romantic feelings and other forms of peer pressure.
However, since the show has focused each season on a different year of high school, the third and fourth seasons will see the characters in their sophomore and senior years. These are perhaps some of the most stressful periods in high school with GPA requirements, college applications, SAT preparations and more. It will be interesting to see how Kaling and Fisher portray parental expectations and academic pressure in the upcoming seasons.
