‘What Lies Beneath’: The only movie you need to watch this Saturday night
Horror is practically a Saturday night tradition that hits the sweet spot every single time and effortlessly fits the bill of the weekend vibe. Whether you’re seeking a genuine adrenaline rush or an excuse to hide behind the popcorn bucket, Netflix has just the pick for you this time: What Lies Beneath.
Scheduled to leave Netflix on Sunday, February 1st, tuning into What Lies Beneath kills two birds with one stone: firstly, it fulfils the Saturday night cravings of a gritty otherworldly escape; secondly, it allows viewers to seize one last opportunity to enjoy the supernatural horror while on Netflix.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, What Lies Beneath, starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, follows former cellist Claire Spencer and her husband Norman, who live at their lakeside home in Vermont. Their relationship becomes strained, especially after Claire’s daughter and Norman’s step-daughter, Caitlin, leaves for college. And the fact that she has been under recovery following a serious accident a year ago doesn’t help her case.
As the tension rises, Claire gets completely fixated on their new neighbours, whom she finds particularly strange. What adds to her suspicion is when the wife suddenly disappears, making her doubt if the husband’s a murderer. Near about the same time, Claire also begins experiencing paranormal activities as she’s convinced about seeing a woman’s body in the lake and later in the reflection of her bathtub.
When Norman dismisses Claire’s fears and suggests therapy, during the session, she mentions seeing a woman with a striking resemblance to her. But then, when she finds out Mary is well and alive, she finally lets go of her doubts surrounding her neighbours.
Not long after, the newspaper clippings fall, and a report of a missing woman, Madison Elizabeth Frank, finally puts her brain to work. Soon, she pays a visit to Madison’s mother, secretly taking a lock of her hair to summon her, only to end up possessed by Madison.
But the entire ordeal triggers a repressed memory that Norman had an affair with Madison, one of his students, during a tough time in their marriage. So, does that mean Norman had something to do with Madison’s death, and it is Madison who has been haunting Claire all along?
Well, that’s your Saturday night homework for the week. You’re free to have your friends pitch in as well, since this flick might leave you frantically switching on every light that’s there in your house.
But do whatever you may, don’t miss out on What Lies Beneath before it leaves Netflix this weekend.
