‘West Side Story’ actor Kyle Allen to play He-Man in Netflix film

Filmmakers and producers have tried umpteen times to create a live-action adaptation of the 1980s classic He-Man animated series Masters of the Universe. However, those projects have never quite made it to print, until now. Netflix has taken over the reins and roped in West Side Story actor, Kyle Allen to don the furry loincloth and iconic armour as the legendary hero.

Allen has also appeared in shows like The Path, American Horror Story: Apocalypse, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things and All My Life. In the upcoming film, he will be seen taking on the role of the fan-favourite hero.

With its narrative originating in sword and magic figurines, the original animated series saw an orphan boy named Adam chance upon his fate as a prince who is supposed to save Eternia. In order to fulfil his destiny, Adam must learn to harness his power as his alter-ego He-Man and save the land from the evil clutches of Skeletor.

Previously, Netflix released a reboot version of the animated series, masters of the Universe: Revelation that was very well-received by critics yet created major controversy among fans, infuriating the director, Kevin Smith. While many of the complaints pertained to the lack of female representation, the show was renewed for a second season that debuted on November 23rd, 2021.

Following their successful animated adaptations, the streaming service will now add a film to the expanding He-Man universe that will be helmed by Adam and Aaron Nee. Known for Band of Robbers, the brother-filmmaker duo will also be seen directing the upcoming project The Lost City, which stars Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum.

One of the producers, Todd Black said, “This movie has been 14 years in the making for us and our partners and we are so excited to tell an entirely new story… and share it with a global audience.”
