‘Wednesday’ topples ‘Stranger Things’ for Netflix's top spot

Netflix’s long-standing hit series, Stranger Things, has finally been dethroned from its number one viewership spot by Wednesday.

Over the past seven years, Stranger Things has enjoyed immense popularity, becoming a fan favourite across streaming and cable platforms.

However, the tides have turned as Wednesday takes the lead with an impressive 252.1million views, leaving Stranger Things season four in a distant second place with 140.7million views. Of course, this doesn’t count the views garnered by all four seasons of the hit sci-fi wonder.

This shift in rankings is a result of Netflix adopting a new method of reporting its top ten rankings. The streaming giant now provides estimated viewership for its weekly charts, calculating the number of views by dividing traditional hours watched by the show’s total runtime. Additionally, Netflix has extended the measurement window from 28 to 91 days, giving a broader perspective on viewership trends.

Stranger Things may have slipped from its top position, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of its fifth and final season. The upcoming season is expected to bring closure to the supernatural saga.

Furthermore, producer/director Shawn Levy has revealed plans to expand the Stranger Things universe by collaborating with Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, aiming to create a Stranger Things Cinematic Universe (STCU).

While Wednesday currently holds the crown, Stranger Things’ dedicated fan base and future endeavours may propel the series to reclaim its reign at the top.

Until then, fans can enjoy the first four seasons of Stranger Things and the first season of Wednesday, available for streaming on Netflix.

As per Variety, the most recent Nielsen chart, released on June 15th, provided data for the week of May 15th to 21st.

The top ten rankings as per Nielsen are:
