‘Wednesday’ season two looks set for release date delay
Despite recent reports that Wednesday season two has finished shooting, industry insiders are still theorising that it may be a long time before the season hits Netflix.
Fans have been waiting with bated breath for the second season of the hit Addams Family spinoff since its first season debuted in November 2022. However, the process of the season coming together has already taken longer than anyone anticipated. To make matters worse, the only official indication Netflix has given of a release date is to say it will come out in 2025.
Paul Tassi of Forbes has crunched the numbers on the likely post-production process Wednesday season two is in for, though – and it doesn’t make good reading for fans. Taking the first season as a guideline, Tassi revealed that it finished shooting on March 30th, 2022, yet the season wasn’t released until November 23rd. That’s nearly an eight month gap.
In truth, though, the post-production process for season two could be even longer than eight months. Reports have suggested that the second season is much bigger in scale, which is likely why it took longer to film, but will also mean more special effects work has to be completed.
All in all, a post-production process similar to the first season would put the release date for season two in the July 2025 range, but if the season is as big as reports suggest, the release date could be pushed back even further. Either way, the gap between seasons one and two will likely be almost three years, which is a huge amount of time to ask fans to wait, even in the modern streaming landscape.
It would certainly behove Netflix to get Wednesday season two on its platform as soon as possible because the show is one of the biggest hits the streaming giant has ever made. Season one clocked up the most total views of any English language show, and in terms of hours viewed, it comes in at third behind only Squid Game and Stranger Things season four.
What has Jenna Ortega said about season two?
There isn’t much officially known about Wednesday season two’s plot, although star Jenna Ortega did drop some titbits during a Variety interview in June 2023. She revealed, “It’s still coming together, but we’ve decided we want to lean into the horror more. We’re ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We’re going to get bolder, more dark.”
Ortega also told Extra, “I would say that we have really incredible set pieces. We’ve only done four episodes so far, but every episode has one strong, outstanding scene or factor, which is kind of nice. Not to describe it like they’re all movies because they’re not, but the season just feels like we’re getting a little bit more of an opportunity to do the things we wanted to accomplish in the first one.”
