Netflix reveals top ten most watched TV series of all-time

Netflix has revealed an updated list of its most-watched English-language TV shows of all-time, and there are a couple of high-profile newcomers to have exploded onto the scene to rank among the streaming service’s biggest episodic originals.

The top dog remains exactly the same, though, with Tim Burton’s Addams Family offshoot Wednesday hauling in a mammoth 252.1 million views to put it leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. For comparison, the fourth season of Stranger Things takes second place, but it’s way behind the Jenna Ortega-fronted series with 140.7 million views.

It’s clear which shows are doing battle to be named as Netflix’s marquee episodic property, with Bridgerton and Stranger Things the only series to feature on the top ten twice, with the steamy period drama’s first season in fourth and its sophomore run down in ninth.

There’s an eclectic mix of limited series and returning shows, too, with Ryan Murphy justifying his lucrative development deal with Netflix by delivering Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, far and away his most successful Netflix original and the platform’s third top-viewed episodic offering ever.

Anya Taylor-Joy’s acclaimed chess drama The Queen’s Gambit retains a spot on the top ten, while The Shield creator Shawn Ryan’s espionage thriller The Night Agent has a second season on the way, which will look to replicate the success of a debut that notched 98 million views and led to a rapid-fire renewal.

Author Harlan Coben has been a regular source of Netflix content for years now, but the seventh series adapted from his bibliography ended up as the biggest by far, with the twists and turns of Fool Me Once launching the easily bingeable effort to eighth place on the all-time charts.

Looking at the way it spent weeks dominating the cultural conversation, it was inevitable that Baby Reindeer would eventually end up as one of Netflix’s biggest-ever shows, which is exactly what happened after Richard Gadd’s searing semi-autobiographical tale of self-destruction and self-loathing sneaked onto the rankings in tenth place by way of almost 87 million views.

Fantasy-tinged horrors, sci-fi stories indebted to the aesthetic of the 1980s, serial killer thrillers, explosive action-packed adventures, murder mysteries, true stories, and no shortage of titillation are all present and accounted for, with Netflix’s most-watched shows ever making for a typically eclectic bunch.
