‘Voicemails for Isabelle’ ending explained: Do Jill and Wes end up together?
The sparks are flying on Netflix for a second time this month, thanks to Voicemails for Isabelle, the long-awaited rom-com bringing Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson back to the genre roots.
Written and directed by Leah McKendrick, the heartwarming Netflix film stars Deutch as Jill, a grieving young woman, coping with the death of her sister, Isabelle, by sending voicemails to her phone number, chronicling the details of her chaotic everyday life, from ranting about her demanding boss and lamenting date mishaps to making known about her endless search for a breakfast taco in San Francisco.
Unbeknownst to her, Isabelle’s number gets reassigned to an elusive realtor, West, from Austin, Texas, who starts hearing Jill complain and gradually falls in love with her, without ever having seen or talked to her. In fact, he’s so fascinated by Jill, Wes travels to San Francisco to turn this one-sided liking into something more real. Wes’s search for Jill leads him to her bench overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, and as they converse, he pretends to be in town for business and on the lookout for good Mexican food.
Although they both fumble instantaneously, the chemistry is undeniable. While the taco-beer date has both promising to keep things strictly platonic, the city tour they take says otherwise. However, as their dates progress, it hits Wes that he still hasn’t confided in Jill about the voicemails. So, do Jill and Wes actually end up and stay together?
Do Jill and Wes end up together in Voicemails for Isabelle?
Well, Wes does take a chance in Voicemails for Isabelle to tell Jill the truth about the voicemails, only to find that she has fallen asleep while watching a Top Chef episode. But does that mean she doesn’t find out about it? Not really. She discovers the truth when she travels to Austin, Texas, with Wes for Breeda and Andy’s wedding.
It happens when Jill calls Isabelle to talk about her swoon-worthy relationship, hearing the number ring in Wes’s pocket. With the cat out of the bag, Jill breaks up with Wes immediately. And as if things weren’t going worse enough, a software update deletes all her saved voicemails from her sister. Despite the heartbreak, Jill tries to introduce the much-needed changes in her life by opening up her own food truck, the dream she had been derailing for so long.
As for Wes? He really does go all out this time to win her back. Seeking help from a co-worker, he not only recovers Jill’s voicemails from Isabelle, but also leaves Jill a one of his own. He tells her that he has changed his work phone number, but will pay for the other line forever to ensure Jill can leave Isabelle the updates of her life without anyone having to hear them.
And since rom-coms are nothing without grand gestures, Voicemails for Isabelle takes viewers straight to the magical night of New Year’s Eve, when Wes asks Jill to meet him at their favourite Austin locale. As he runs fanatically, hoping she’d come and he’d not miss out, he finds Jill munching on tacos. While they definitely end up together, the finale also finds the pair receiving Izzy’s blessing, culminating in a happily-ever-after.
