'Virgin River' season 4: Everything we know so far

Sue Tenney’s Virgin River is based on the eponymous novel series by Robyn Carr. The first season debuted on Netflix on December 6, 2019, and has successfully garnered quite a bit of following ever since. The third season of the series premiered on July 9, 2021, and a fourth season is on its way as well.

The series is laced with romantic pursuits, melodramatic tension and conflicts. Watching the characters slowly unravel is indeed delightful. The characters are portrayed in a realistic manner, and the tragedies are heightened by stellar acting performances, harrowing music and convoluted plotlines. Starring Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel and Martin Henderson as Jack, the series also features the likes of actors such as Colin Lawrence, Jenny Cooper, Annette O’Toole and more.

The series is essentially the story of Mel, a nurse and midwife, who escapes to the titular small town, looking for a fresh start. However, she soon realises that she cannot warm up to the town just yet as life is not as simple as she imagined it to be. While healing herself both mentally and spiritually, Mel must adjust to the various twists and turns that are peppered throughout her journey. The series had been filmed in British Columbia, Canada, and the story is set in a fictitious town, the name of which was derived from that of a tributary of the Colorado River that flows through Nevada, Arizona and Utah in the United States.

Before Netflix streams season four, it would be helpful for fans if we gave them a quick recap of whatever happened in the last three seasons before addressing questions regarding the release of the upcoming season and the possible plotline.

Here is everything you need to know about Virgin River season 4.

Everything you need to know about Virgin River season 4

What happened in season 3?

Season 3 has not received good reviews, and the ratings are pretty low in general. It was supposedly messy, sappy and an overall let-down. Even the intense psychological exploration of the characters could not stop the show from sinking to unimaginable depths.

While season 2 ended on a dramatic high with Jack, shot and wounded, being left on the floor to die, the third season begins from that very juncture, and, no surprises, Jack lives! The show does not address Jack’s injury and takes place nearly three weeks in the future.

While other characters are facing their own share of struggles, Mel is conflicted over the idea of having a baby and is often caught in between helping others and finding time to think every cliffhanger is resolved abruptly, and the audience is not given enough time to comprehend the situation.

While the third season could have made use of various potent elements to live up to its stature, including Jack’s PTSD and the kind of effect it has on his interpersonal relationships, the writing seems pretty lame and superficial. Although the show will most likely be renewed for a fourth season, fans are really disappointed, and all Virgin River showrunners can do now is to bring back the same feeling of suspense, love and loss as their saving grace.

Will there be a season 4 of Virgin River?

There has not been any official announcement about the show being renewed for a fourth season, nor has there been an intimation about the show being shelved, which makes one continue hoping.

Given the disastrous third season, which followed the intense and poignant first and second season, it is only fair that the showrunners try and rectify their mistake with a well-planned and visually and intellectually appealing fourth season. While a 2021 release is not likely, even if the show gets renewed, the fourth season shall most likely stream on Netflix by the end of 2022.

Who are the cast members on Virgin River season 4?

What can be expected from the fourth season?

Season 4 shall also be packed with a lot of drama, albeit with the hope that it is not as lacklustre as that of season 3. Mel’s pregnancy was revealed by her in season 3, but season 4 shall most likely help discover who the father is. One of the recurring cast members, Lynda Boyd, who played the role of Lilly, will reportedly make a comeback through various flashbacks.

We shall also get to know whether Jack shall lose the custody of his kids after his former wife married Todd, as well as if Brady was the one to have attacked Jack in the bar. A lot of loose threads shall most likely be tied up for a more conclusive ending of the fourth season.
