‘Twilight’ is back on Netflix charts, and apparently we’re all teenagers again

Well, that’s our dignity straight out the window, then. We spent years convincing ourselves we’d grown out of fancying Edward Cullen, and now Twilight is back on the Netflix charts, and nobody’s to be blamed but us for dragging ourselves into our teenage years as though we’ve never left. All that growing up and pretending to be sensible adults was useless as one looks at Robert Pattinson’s ridiculous vampire looks and has us forgetting the adulting.

The 2008 romance has made it back into Netflix’s US Top 10, reaching sixth place for the last week, and considering it’s been nearly 18 years since the film came out, that’s quite something. The whole Twilight saga came on Netflix on October 1st, so naturally, we’ve decided it’s time to revisit our questionable taste in fictional men.

And damn, the nostalgia hits hard. Remember when Edward Cullen walked into that school cafeteria looking like he hadn’t slept since the Victorian era, and everyone thought he was the most gorgeous bloke alive? The pale skin and that permanent look of constipation… honestly, what were we thinking? Although, let’s not pretend we’d have ignored him either while recalling that signature Kristen Stewart lip bite.

Watching Twilight as an adult is a laugh because half the things we found romantic back then are a bit concerning now. Edward sneaking into Bella’s bedroom to watch her sleep? That’s not boyfriend material; that’s a police report waiting to happen, although teenage us thought it was the sweetest thing since someone sharing their lunch at school.

And then there is the whole Team Edward versus Team Jacob business, which still causes arguments and is responsible for countless broken friendships. You couldn’t mention one without someone defending the other, and for what? Two fictional guys fighting over Bella Swan.

But you’ve got to admit, Twilight had some brilliant moments, even if some of them make you practically gag. That baseball scene with Muse’s Supermassive Black Hole playing? Absolute cinema. A bunch of vampires waiting for a thunderstorm to play baseball shouldn’t work, but it’s still one of the coolest scenes in the film.

Of course, Twilight is cheesy, and some of the dialogue deserves a good laugh, but that’s what makes revisiting it so much fun. There’s something lovely about watching a film that takes you back to your prime years and having that nostalgic tea served right up.

So let the film snobs have their moan. Twilight is climbing Netflix’s charts because people still love it, even if they’re embarrassed to admit it, and it’s best to enjoy it while it’s still on Netflix because when it comes to removals, the platform has no mercy.
