Three crucial revelations from ‘The Investigation of Lucy Letby’

Netflix recently premiered a chilling true-crime documentary, The Investigation of Lucy Letby, examining the contentious case of the neonatal nurse convicted of murdering seven babies.

Ahead of the Netflix release, the documentary already faced scathing backlash from Letby’s family, who alleged invasion of privacy. However, the controversy clearly has had no shortcomings in the anticipation surrounding The Investigation of Lucy Letby.

If anything, the other way round. As of now, Letby is serving multiple sentences. As for the documentary, it captures never-before-heard insider accounts from those closest to the cast, including detectives and one of the victim’s mothers.

While the 90-minute documentary is packed with spine-tingling revelations, here are the three biggest ones from The Investigation of Lucy Letby.

Three crucial revelations from The Investigation of Lucy Letby

Victim’s mother’s account

One of the victims’ mothers was featured in The Investigation of Lucy Letby, referred to as Sarah to protect her anonymity, who opened up about losing her baby, identified as Zoe. She detailed that her water broke out three weeks before the expected delivery date, but the scan showed the baby was fine. However, the process of giving birth was severely complicated as she had to go through 60 hours of labour.

“I felt something wasn’t right, so I insisted I needed a C-section,” she recounted. “It was hard looking at her in the incubator. I couldn’t take her out, but I was able to hold her hand. She was fragile, small, and precious.” The staff even confirmed that the progress Zoe was showing was well, with no cause for concern. But then, things went south quite rapidly, and Sarah lost Zoe to a threat she didn’t know existed in the first place.

Lucy Letby’s friend’s defence

In the Netflix documentary, one of Lucy Letby’s friends, referred to as Maisie, recalls their first meeting when they were new students. She shared the first day when Lucy entered the classroom and chose to sit alone.

“There was something about her smile that just put me at ease straight away,” Maisie said. Likewise, it wasn’t long before their bond grew inseparable. She added that her parents were actually very proud of her academic achievements and the fact that they even undertook their first placement together at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

According to Maisie, despite everything, things weren’t easy for Lucy at the hospital. She acknowledged that the nursing staff “ignored” Letby whenever she wanted to join their discussions. “I started to think that some people were actively going out of their way to make things hard for Lucy.”

Lucy Letby had over “250 confidential hospital handover sheets”

During Letby’s bail, investigators had plenty of evidence on their plate to examine, including a box labelled ‘keep.’ Several handover documents from the hospital were discovered in the box.

The confidential papers comprised personal details, including date of birth, children’s names, and a summary of their medical conditions. Further investigation proved that some of these documents were about infants who had collapsed and subsequently died – something the officers found “obviously deeply concerning.”

Questioning during a police interview ultimately unveiled nearly 250 confidential handover sheets as evidence, about which she said, “They are just sheets that have inadvertently come home in my pocket. I’ve not emptied my pockets before coming home.”
