The shocking true story behind ‘Nobody Dumps My Daughter’
Netflix is now home to yet another Lifetime movie, Nobody Dumps My Daughter, which originally premiered in 2024 as part of the network’s Ripped from the Headlines series. And in case it has you wondering, the movie is, indeed, inspired by a shocking true story.
Nobody Dumps My Daughter opens with the tale of high school heartbreak when teenager Jimmy breaks up with Theresa. Following the unfortunate split, Theresa’s mother, Mary, grows increasingly obsessed with reuniting the pair, only to get rebuffed several times, until she finally turns to a fortune teller for help in what appears to be her mission to restore her daughter’s virtue.
The fortune teller returns with a shocking solution, which ultimately pushes Mary to resort to dangerous tactics of revenge.
For those curious, the Lifetime movie, directed by Stanley M Brooks, is seemingly based on the real-life 1993 case of Joey Fischer. At the time, Fischer was a high school student in Brownsville, Texas, who had been in a relationship with Cristina Cisneros. Although their relationship didn’t last long and the former couple moved on in their respective lives, Cisneros’s conservative, superstitious mother, Dora, had a hard time sitting this one out.
After consulting a fortune teller named Maria Martinez, Dora Cisneros planned multiple plots to get them back together. But when none of those schemes came of use, Cristina’s mother chose a path of crime that scarred both families forever.
Fischer was shot and killed on March 3rd, 1993, outside his family home in Rancho Viejo, near Brownsville, Texas (via The New Yorker). According to the tabloid, Cisneros initially offered Fischer $500, hoping the bribe would be enough to get back with her daughter. However, when he declined, she asked Martinez to cast a spell on him. Martinez reportedly informed that she couldn’t have done so, leading to Cisneros’ decision to have him murdered instead.
Cisneros paid $3000 to Martinez, who then, reportedly, sent the money and Fischer’s picture to one of her clients, Daniel Orlando Garza. As per the US Department of Justice, Garza hired two hitmen in February 1993, Israel Olivares and Heriberto Pizana, to do the dirty work.
Cisneros and Martinez were subsequently arrested in April of that year, and a year later, Cisneros was found guilty of murdering Fischer while Martinez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder. Mary was sentenced to life imprisonment, and Martinez received a 20-year prison sentence.
According to myRGV.com, Cisneros was still incarcerated in 2021, and Garza was also serving his life sentence. Martinez was released in 2001. She later died in Matamoros, Mexico. As for the two hitmen, they were also allegedly put on trial.
